Job Description
Wise is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join its Partner Experience team based on-site in London. Wise Platform enables major financial institutions, software providers, and large enterprises to integrate cross-border payment solutions using APIs built on Wise infrastructure. The Partner Experience group develops and maintains systems that allow enterprise clients to accelerate their go-live timelines and centralize daily operations. Core ownership areas include the Partner Portal—utilized by large banks for transfer management, fraud reporting, compliance, and team administration—alongside backend services for onboarding, user permissions, and communications.
This role focuses heavily on greenfield development, allowing the engineer to design systems from scratch rather than primarily maintaining legacy code. The position suits a collaborative builder who can navigate technical ambiguity, investigate existing dependencies, and design resilient architecture. The team operates with minimal process, emphasizing rapid iteration based on user feedback, direct ownership from technical discovery to production support, and close cross-functional cooperation with product managers, designers, and adjacent teams.
Responsibilities
- Develop backend microservices supporting partner features like fraud reporting, case management, audit logging, RFI handling, and transaction visibility
- Build and maintain role-based access control systems and permission frameworks for portal users
- Implement SAML 2.0 single sign-on integrations for enterprise partners to resolve identity mapping
- Extend communication layer services between Wise and partners to support new workflows and case types
- Design consistent, well-documented partner-facing RESTful APIs
- Collaborate with Compliance, KYC, and FinCrime teams to integrate sanctions RFI workflows and fraud reporting
- Conduct technical discovery, map current systems, evaluate dependencies, and write design documents
- Handle debugging and production support for live partner issues
Requirements
- Commercial experience designing, building, and deploying backend microservices using Java and Spring Boot
- Familiarity with domain-driven design, event-driven architecture, and microservices patterns
- Experience designing and maintaining RESTful APIs using OpenAPI, Swagger, OAuth2, and versioning strategies
- Ability to model data, write queries, and maintain relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL
- Experience mapping complex technical landscapes, analyzing dependencies, and writing technical documentation
- Ability to work reliably with minimal supervision and build cross-functional relationships
Qualifications
- Prior experience working on enterprise portals, B2B SaaS products, or partner platforms
- Knowledge of payments systems and international money movement complexities
- Familiarity with identity and access management standards including SAML, SSO, SPIFFE, and OAuth2
- Exposure to event streaming platforms like Kafka
- Experience working within a platform team serving internal or external consumers
- Ability to communicate complex technical decisions clearly to non-technical stakeholders
- Interest in foreign exchange, international finance, or payments infrastructure
