Job Description
Wise seeks a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Partner Experience team located on-site in London. Wise operates an infrastructure platform that allows banks, software firms, and large enterprises to embed cross-border payment solutions directly into their own applications via APIs. Within this division, the Partner Experience unit develops and maintains systems designed to help enterprise partners deploy quickly and handle everyday administrative tasks in a centralized space. The engineering group oversees the Partner Portal utilized by major financial institutions for tracking transfers, submitting compliance information, reporting fraud, and organizing internal teams. Additionally, the staff builds backend services handling user onboarding, access permissions, and automated communications. Most development focuses on greenfield projects, requiring professionals to design architecture from the ground up rather than relying on established enterprise templates. The position suits individuals who thrive in ambiguous environments, enjoy mapping complex systems prior to coding, and can independently drive features from technical discovery through to production release.
Responsibilities
- Build backend microservices supporting partner-facing capabilities such as fraud alerts, case management, audit logs, and transaction monitoring
- Develop and manage role-based access control and user permission systems within the portal
- Implement SAML 2.0 single sign-on integrations for enterprise clients, including identity mapping between partner networks and Wise
- Expand messaging and communication layer services to support new workflows and case types
- Design public-facing RESTful endpoints with a focus on usability, consistency, and clear documentation
- Collaborate with Compliance, FinCrime, and KYC departments to integrate sanctions request-for-information workflows and fraud reporting
- Perform technical discovery by reviewing current architectures, analyzing dependencies, and producing design documentation
- Provide ongoing production support and troubleshoot live technical problems reported by partners
Requirements
- Design, build, and deploy backend microservices using Java and Spring Boot
- Apply domain-driven design, event-driven architecture, and microservices patterns
- Design and maintain RESTful APIs commercially while utilizing OpenAPI or Swagger, OAuth2, and versioning protocols
- Manage relational databases like MySQL or PostgreSQL, including data modeling, indexing, and query optimization
- Map complex technical landscapes, understand dependencies, and write clear documentation of findings
- Deliver work reliably and independently without the need for constant supervision
- Collaborate smoothly with adjacent teams, unblock dependencies, and build professional relationships
- Design software with enterprise constraints in mind, including security, auditability, reliability, and compliance
Qualifications
- Background in creating enterprise portals, partner platforms, or B2B SaaS applications
- Familiarity with international payment systems and cross-border money movement challenges
- Experience with identity and access management technologies including SAML, SSO, SPIFFE, and OAuth2
- Knowledge of Kafka or similar event streaming platforms
- Background working inside a platform engineering team that supports multiple internal or external consumers
- Ability to articulate complex technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders such as product managers, compliance staff, and partners
- Interest in international finance, payments infrastructure, or foreign exchange
