Job Description

Mercury operates as a fintech enterprise crafting comprehensive financial infrastructure for startups, protecting its clients and the financial ecosystem through dedicated risk management operations. The organization is seeking a Senior Risk Investigator specializing in Fraud Incident Management & Partner Response to tackle complex challenges within fraud operations.

This senior individual contributor position suits an investigator capable of navigating ambiguous situations, managing high-severity fraud events, and communicating effectively with bank partners, auditors, and regulators. The professional will direct incident response from initial detection through postmortem analysis for both first-party and third-party fraud. Responsibilities include writing defensible incident memos, coordinating operational responses with partner banks, supporting regulatory audits, and converting incident findings into durable preventive controls.

The role involves collaborating closely with cross-functional teams including fraud enablement, risk strategy, product, engineering, compliance, legal, and partnerships. Candidates should be comfortable synthesizing raw data using AI tools, making strategic containment or escalation decisions, and mentoring teammates on escalation protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Manage fraud incident response as the operational direct responsible individual across all product offerings
  • Mobilize cross-functional teams to contain threats, determine impact, and drive incident decisions
  • Conduct retrospectives and postmortems to uncover root causes, control gaps, and required remediation
  • Draft comprehensive incident and retrospective memos for internal governance and external bank partners
  • Serve as the operational day-to-day point of contact for partner bank risk and investigations teams
  • Support audit and regulatory observations by validating facts, providing context, and tracking issues to closure
  • Collaborate with enablement and quality control to translate incident learnings into training materials and playbooks

Requirements

  • Six or more years of professional background in financial crimes, risk operations, or fraud investigations at regulated financial institutions or fintechs
  • Demonstrated experience handling high-severity fraud incidents, driving multi-functional responses, and executing postmortems
  • Expert written communication skills with a history of producing precise reports and regulatory memos for executive or examiner review
  • Practical understanding of regulated institutional environments and direct interaction with sponsor banks, examiners, or auditors
  • Solid grasp of United States payment rails and common fraud typologies including ACH, wires, checks, card schemes, mule activity, and synthetic fraud
  • Ability to extract and analyze volume, loss, and rate data using SQL or dashboard reporting tools
  • Track record of influencing cross-functional peers without direct reporting authority to reach decisions
  • Experience leveraging automation and AI solutions to summarize evidence, draft documentation, and track statuses

Qualifications

  • Background working on the sponsor-bank or bank-partner side of fraud operations such as suspicious activity reporting or Regulation E error resolution
  • Familiarity with card network regulations and NACHA operating rules
  • Exposure to business process outsourcing or managed operations
  • Knowledge of incident command structures, severity grading, and written postmortem methodologies
  • Background in continuous improvement or formal project management
  • Prior work history within a fast-paced fintech enterprise

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary
  • Equity compensation in the form of stock options or restricted stock units
  • Comprehensive benefits package aligned with industry standards
