Job Description
Elastic is hiring a senior site reliability engineer for its Hosted Infra group. The Cloud Infrastructure SRE team integrates, scales and evolves multi-cloud infrastructure spanning four cloud providers, more than 70 regions and a fleet of hosts numbering in the tens of thousands, all powering Elastic Cloud.
The engineer would build internal tools and services rather than only running scripts, using automation, Infrastructure as Code and configuration management to remove manual toil. Responsibilities include improving host reliability and lifecycle across several cloud providers, strengthening monitoring and alerting so incidents are prevented rather than only answered, and scaling global infrastructure as demand grows.
The role also means contributing to code reviews, writing designs, runbooks and postmortems, planning upcoming work, and giving and receiving mentorship. Engineers take part in the on-call rotation, respond to incidents, improve runbooks and champion reliability improvements.
Candidates should have production experience running large-scale cloud compute through automation, ideally hundreds of hosts or more. Deep Linux knowledge, experience building software in Go and experience running containerized workloads in production are expected. The posting values an approach that starts with the customer, thinks in systems and focuses on root causes, along with clear status updates and comfort with real-time and asynchronous work across time zones.
Useful extras include production use of infrastructure-as-code and configuration tools such as Terraform, OpenTofu or Ansible, container work with Docker or Kubernetes, and on-call experience with observability tools such as the Elastic Stack, Graphite, Prometheus or Influx. The posting does not specify a work location or a salary range.
Responsibilities
- Write code that automates sprawling infrastructure, shipping internal tools and services
- Raise the reliability of hosts and manage their lifecycle across cloud providers
- Build alerting and monitoring that prevents incidents rather than only responding to them
- Scale global infrastructure and improve infrastructure management processes
- Contribute to code reviews, documentation and planning, and mentor or be mentored
- Take part in an SRE on-call rotation, respond to incidents and join postmortems
Requirements
- Track record running large cloud estates through automation, ideally at hundreds of hosts or more
- Deep experience with Linux systems and debugging at the operating system level
- Experience building software with Golang and reviewing others' code
- Running containerized workloads in production
- An approach that puts the customer first and reasons about systems and root causes
- Ability to work across time zones and communicate status clearly
- A sensible approach to using AI tools to reduce operational burden
Qualifications
- Real-world use of infrastructure-as-code and configuration tools such as Terraform, OpenTofu, Puppet or Ansible
- Production experience with tools such as Docker, Kubernetes or Ubuntu
- On-call experience using observability tools such as Elastic Stack, Graphite, Prometheus or Influx
- Hands-on work building solutions on the Elastic Stack
