Job Description

Canonical is hiring a Senior Site Reliability and GitOps Engineer for its Information Systems team. The listing is remote and full-time, and it does not name a region. The role suits a senior technologist who prefers automating everything, loves Linux, and wants to help customers and the Ubuntu community succeed with Ubuntu and open source products. The IS group keeps Canonical's IT production systems running, including services used by more than 60 million Ubuntu users.

The senior engineer leads automation and GitOps work within the group, acting as an embedded tech lead, works closely with the IS architect to keep solutions consistent with the department's architecture vision, and designs services that IS can offer across the company as products. Other duties include growing infrastructure as code, automating operations across private and public clouds, keeping core services, networks and infrastructure under operational control, building monitoring and alerting with Prometheus, Grafana and Elasticsearch, sharing expertise through design sessions and mentoring, and carrying final responsibility for urgent escalations.

The posting looks for a modern view of hosting architecture driven by code across private and public clouds; it also values a product mindset and significant Python project experience. Kubernetes or other container orchestration, the ability to deploy cloud infrastructure with code, and firm knowledge of Linux networking, routing, firewalls and storage are expected. An interest in Ubuntu or Debian is valued.

Responsibilities

  • Lead automation and GitOps practice as an embedded tech lead
  • Keep solutions consistent with the IS architecture vision, working hand in hand with the IS architect
  • Design services that IS can offer internally as products
  • Grow infrastructure as code and refine IaC processes
  • Automate operations across private and public clouds
  • Keep core services, networks and infrastructure under operational control
  • Build monitoring and alerting for systems and services
  • Assist colleagues across distributed engineering, operations and support groups worldwide
  • Accept final responsibility for urgent escalations

Requirements

  • Current thinking on hosting design, with infrastructure defined in code across private and public estates
  • A product mindset focused on building products rather than one-off fixes
  • Python development experience on large projects
  • Background running Kubernetes or comparable container schedulers
  • Demonstrated skill in provisioning cloud infrastructure through code
  • Working grasp of Linux networking, routing and firewall configuration
  • Comfort with Linux storage stacks spanning Ceph and databases
  • Practical background in running enterprise Linux server fleets
  • Wide-ranging understanding of cloud computing ideas and tools
  • Bachelor's degree or higher, preferably in computing or a related engineering field
  • Clear English across written, voice, video and in-person communication

Qualifications

  • Drive to troubleshoot from the kernel up to web applications and to seek input when needed
  • Flexibility and quick learning in rapidly changing environments
  • Experience working within distributed teams
  • Passion for open source, particularly Ubuntu or Debian

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Bonus or commission tied to yearly performance
  • USD 2,000 per year learning and development budget
  • Annual pay review and recognition awards
  • Annual leave and maternity and paternity leave
  • Team member assistance and wellness platform
  • Two in-person team sprints per year
  • Opportunities to visit new locations, Priority Pass and upgraded long-haul travel
