Responsibilities
- Restructure tables, keys and indexes in a large SQL Server schema through incremental, version-controlled migrations
- Retire outdated structures and clean up historical data without disrupting clinical users
- Diagnose slow queries from execution plans and rewrite them as set-based, sargable SQL
- Swap per-row loops for batched writes and tidy indexed temp tables
- Migrate legacy PHP and C# inline SQL into typed Kotlin and jOOQ repositories
- Build SQL injection defenses, locking conventions and query-attribution diagnostics
- Create Gradle-based migration pipelines, containerized SQL Server test setups and regression checks
- Set SQL and data-access standards and mentor developers through code reviews
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a technical field, or equivalent experience
- Seven or more years of professional software development, with at least four years writing and refactoring database code
- Advanced T-SQL skills on SQL Server, including tuning, plan reading and index design
- Record of incrementally refactoring a legacy relational schema alongside production application code
- Kotlin or Java with Spring Boot or a similar framework
- Liquibase or Flyway experience, with schema managed as code in Git-based pipelines
- Working knowledge of lock behavior, isolation settings and transaction correctness under load
- Confident handling of sensitive patient data and protection against SQL injection
- Agile delivery using Gradle, Git and DevOps habits across Windows and Linux
Qualifications
- jOOQ or comparable typed SQL tooling and schema-driven code generation
- Background in legacy PHP and/or C# (.NET) application code
- Hands-on time with Testcontainers, or Docker-hosted SQL Server for test runs, plus golden-master and load testing
- Familiarity with Query Store, DMVs, Extended Events, Datadog or New Relic
- Exposure to Amazon RDS for SQL Server or other AWS data offerings
- Healthcare data formats including HL7 and DICOM, or regulated sectors such as FDA or FAA environments
- PostgreSQL experience
