Spotify is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for the Authorization team inside its Platform division. The organization creates essential infrastructure, tooling, and frameworks designed to support a user base reaching one billion customers. In this backend-focused role, you will build and manage the permissioning systems that grant creators, teams, agents, and licensors secure access to manage their presence across audio formats including Music, Podcasts, and Audiobooks.
This position is ideal for a backend specialist who can handle distributed systems at scale. You will be responsible for evolving critical architecture, balancing long-term technical design with current business needs, and ensuring system reliability, performance, and security. While your primary expertise will be in backend development, the position also involves cross-functional collaboration across product, frontend, and data engineering.

Responsibilities
- Design, construct, release, and run scalable backend services handling authorization, permissions, and team management across Spotify
- Take accountability for critical systems providing secure access to content and capabilities for creators, partners, and team members
- Scale the backend architecture to accommodate growth in users, products, and use cases while preserving high reliability and security standards
- Enhance workflows and systems that give creators access to their profiles, content, and teams
- Evaluate technical trade-offs to balance long-term architecture with immediate product requirements
- Collaborate with engineers and cross-functional teams to define authorization requirements and build reusable platform capabilities
- Contribute to data-related work and frontend experiences when beneficial
- Elevate engineering standards through design reviews, technical judgment, operational excellence, and mentorship
Requirements
- Extensive experience in designing, building, and operating backend services using Java or similar technologies
- Background in owning distributed, high-scale, or business-critical systems focused on reliability, performance, and security
- Practical experience utilizing relational databases at scale, including performance tuning and optimization
- Ability to reason about platform-wide architecture, APIs, data flows, and dependencies
- Experience working in a product-driven environment linking technical decisions to business outcomes
