Affirm is offering a remote-first opportunity for a Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Card Loan Platform) to help build the transaction decision engine for its card products. In this role, you will be on the critical path for every swipe, designing high-availability services that handle real-time approvals, originations, and refunds in milliseconds. The Card Loan Platform team creates the distributed systems and invisible infrastructure that ensure each pay-later transaction is backed by its own unique loan. This position is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems at scale and collaborating across multiple departments including product, data science, analytics, design, legal, and accounting.
As part of the team, you will steer technical strategy, plan project execution, design micro-services and event-driven architectures, and maintain system health. Affirm operates as a remote-first organization where most jobs can be performed from nearly anywhere within the country of employment, though new hires will attend an in-person onboarding experience and some roles may occasionally require office visits. Responsibilities
- Drive technical strategy by leading project planning, prioritization, and execution aligned with business and product goals
- Lead end-to-end system design and development for large-scale, high-availability services, APIs, and data models
- Collaborate across functional partners including Product, Analytics, Design, Legal, and Accounting to execute card loan attribution and lifecycle strategies
- Ensure system health and performance by analyzing technical issues, optimizing code, and promoting long-term scalability
- Mentor junior engineers, guide technical discussions, lead design reviews, and champion best practices through code reviews
Requirements
- Bring at least five years of experience in software engineering or development with a strong grasp of system design and architecture
- Demonstrate motivation as a leader who fosters continuous learning and team growth
- Communicate complex ideas clearly to diverse audiences
- Apply strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a creative, solution-oriented mindset
- Show proficiency in modern programming languages such as Python or Kotlin
