Phantom is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Money Movement) to build and evolve the backend infrastructure connecting Phantom Cash to blockchains. This remote, full-time role involves designing APIs and services that blend systems engineering with product pragmatism in the cryptocurrency sector. Phantom is an organization of approximately 180 team members backed by a $150M Series C investment from Paradigm, Sequoia Capital, and a16z, and is known for creating self-custodial finance applications that support tens of millions of users globally.
This position is well-suited for engineers who understand both blockchain protocols and client-server architecture, and who want to scale dependable financial systems. Team members will focus on reliability, concurrency, ordering, and data consistency while collaborating across multiple pods. Phantom partners with leading financial organizations such as Stripe, Visa, Kalshi, and Hyperliquid to provide accessible financial tools across Solana, Bitcoin, Polygon, and Ethereum networks.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, maintain, and evolve backend services and APIs that link Phantom Cash to various blockchains
- Balance system reliability, engineering quality, and execution speed for scalable performance
- Collaborate across different internal pods and document technical processes rigorously
- Mentor other engineers and raise the overall technical execution bar
Requirements
- Strong understanding of client-server architecture alongside blockchain protocols
- Experience building Node.js and NestJS applications at scale
- Knowledge of event-driven design principles including queues, retries, and idempotency
- Familiarity with REST API architecture covering versioning, pagination, error models, authentication, and rate-limiting
- Understanding of full-stack trade-offs regarding state management between client and server, as well as latency budgets
- Knowledge of distributed-systems fundamentals such as concurrency, data consistency, ordering, and retries
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience
- Familiarity with Kubernetes, AWS operations, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and on-call ownership
- Demonstrated interest in the cryptocurrency ecosystem, wallets, protocols, and security practices
- Prior hands-on professional background in fintech or crypto fields such as exchanges, ledgers, wallets, or payment rails
- Understanding of smart contracts and how on-chain programs interact with off-chain services
- Experience with blockchain integrations, with a preference for Solana and willingness to accept EVM experience
- Track record of shipping high-quality products within mature engineering organizations
