This position focuses on the Data and Storage Services organization, specifically contributing to the Online Storage team that manages databases as a platform for all Affirm offerings. The chosen professional will build, scale, and architect distributed and relational SQL systems while helping shape team roadmaps and collaborating across departments.
This role is ideal for a seasoned backend engineer with extensive database experience who enjoys tackling open-ended infrastructure problems. Responsibilities include engineering control planes for distributed SQL technologies, managing zero-downtime migrations, and tuning networking stacks on Kubernetes. Candidates must reside in specific Canadian provinces including Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan.
Responsibilities
- Build and operate the control plane for large-scale distributed SQL databases like MySQL and TiDB to automate provisioning, failover, upgrades, and backups.
- Design and execute zero-downtime schema and data migrations across multi-tenant database clusters.
- Manage the Kubernetes networking stack connecting services to storage, incorporating connection proxies such as ProxySQL and optimizing for latency and resilience.
- Deliver quarterly team objectives, guide engineers through complex problems, and support product development lifecycle collaboration.
- Monitor team metrics, handle escalations, and participate in on-call and maintenance rotations.
- Establish code review and design standards while mentoring peers and sharing technical knowledge.
Requirements
- Have at least five years of professional experience as a software engineer.
- Bring hands-on production experience designing, launching, and scaling backend systems and large-scale database deployments.
- Demonstrate deep knowledge in distributed databases and database technologies such as MySQL, TiDB, Postgres, Spanner, Vitess, or CockroachDB.
- Understand distributed database architecture, data modeling, SQL tuning, and performance optimization.
- Possess familiarity with database benchmarking, capacity planning, connection poolers, and proxies.
- Have built database control-plane or automation tooling for tasks like provisioning, upgrades, or schema migrations on Kubernetes.
