Job Description
Nebius operates as a cloud infrastructure provider focused on the global AI economy, delivering a platform that supports developers and enterprises through data training, model training, and production deployment. Listed on Nasdaq and headquartered in Amsterdam with global R&D hubs, the company employs over 1,500 people, including hundreds of engineers. The YDB Development Team is currently hiring a Senior Software Engineer with C++ expertise to work on the open-source YDB platform.
In this hybrid or remote within the EU position, the engineer will help evolve YDB architecture for modern hardware such as QLC NVMe drives, dual 800 Gb/s network adapters, NVIDIA GB300-based systems, and SMR HDDs. Responsibilities include designing data placement, developing erasure-coding schemes, minimizing recovery times following outages, preventing data corruption, and supporting automation across production clusters that manage hundreds of petabytes of data.
This role suits professionals who want to see their code deployed into production environments within weeks to solve real-world problems in large-scale distributed systems.
Responsibilities
- Redesign core components of YDB architecture for QLC NVMe drives to increase storage density while managing resource consumption
- Adapt software for dual 800 Gb/s network adapters to minimize CPU overhead and memory bandwidth usage
- Optimize operations for NVIDIA GB300-based systems by supporting Arm-based hosts and offloading processing to BlueField DPUs
- Build data placement, sequential write routines, garbage collection, and recovery strategies for high-capacity SMR HDDs
- Design wide erasure-coding schemes to decrease space amplification while preserving data durability and availability
- Decrease recovery and rebalancing durations after device outages while minimizing disruptions to foreground workloads
- Implement mechanisms to prevent, detect, and recover from silent data corruption across storage, networking, and memory
- Build system capabilities and interfaces to support fleet-wide automation for deployment, configuration, upgrades, and diagnostics
Requirements
- At least five years of professional background creating high-load systems using C or C++, or three years of experience focused on distributed storage systems
- Background in building high-performance and low-latency software components
- Familiarity with core dumps, flame graphs, and sanitizer-enabled builds
- Understanding of NUMA architectures, CPU caches, and atomic operations
- Authorization to work in the country of application with proof of eligibility upon hire
Qualifications
- Experience designing and building production-grade databases or distributed storage systems
- Familiarity with on-disk data structures such as B+ trees and LSM trees, along with storage algorithms including checksumming and erasure coding
- Understanding of internal mechanisms for conventional HDDs, SMR HDDs, and NVMe
- Familiarity with debugging and profiling instruments like gdb, perf, VTune, and bpftrace
- Knowledge of the Linux kernel, io_uring, libaio, and SPDK/DPDK
- Familiarity with DNS, TCP, UDP, IP, and ideally RoCE/RDMA or InfiniBand
- Experience working with Grafana and Kubernetes
- Background in handling production incidents
