The company is currently searching for a remote Senior Staff Data Scientist, Consumer Relevance to join the Consumer team on a full-time basis. In this position, the technical leader will act as the primary authority on relevance metrics, guiding how the organization evaluates recommendations, search results, and feed quality across an interconnected network of contributors and consumers. This role suits an experienced quantitative expert who enjoys tackling complex ranking and retrieval challenges, defining analytical frameworks, and partnering closely with machine learning and product teams. Responsibilities include building evaluation methodologies, designing experiments for networked environments, and mentoring other data scientists. Qualified candidates will have extensive industry experience in data science, applied science, or ranking-focused roles, backed by a relevant Ph.D. or master's degree. Selected individuals will be eligible for a base salary ranging between $232,500 and $325,500 USD, alongside equity in the form of restricted stock units and a comprehensive benefits package.
Responsibilities
- Act as the technical authority on relevance metrics and evaluation methods across the Consumer organization
- Create metrics frameworks and offline evaluation approaches for ranking and recommendation systems
- Design and analyze experiments while accounting for networked platform challenges like community spillover effects
- Spot opportunities where enhanced measurement unlocks product insights regarding content quality and search intent
- Collaborate with machine learning engineers and product teams to translate model metrics into user impact
- Guide long-term product strategy for Feeds and Search through experimentation insights and metric deep-dives
- Mentor other data scientists regarding relevance evaluation, statistical rigor, and experimentation best practices
- Share methodological advances both internally and externally within the scientific community
Requirements
- Deep expertise in metrics design and evaluation for ranking and recommendation systems
- Strong understanding of causal inference and experimentation methodology for ranking systems
- Experience defining and validating quality metrics for content ranking, search, or recommendations at scale
- Strong theoretical grounding in experimental design including power analysis and variance reduction techniques
- Expert knowledge of SQL and proficiency in R and or Python for statistical computing
- Demonstrated ability to influence product and organizational strategy through data-driven insights
- Excellent communication skills to explain nuanced statistical concepts to senior stakeholders
- Experience mentoring data scientists and building organizational capability in evaluation and experimentation
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Statistics, Computer Science, Information Retrieval, Economics, or a related quantitative field with a strong focus on recommendation systems, ranking, causal inference, or evaluation methodology, or an M.S. with equivalent expertise
- For M.S. holders, 12 or more years of industry experience in applied science, data science, or relevance and ranking-focused roles
- For Ph.D. holders, 8 or more years of industry experience in applied science, data science, or relevance and ranking-focused roles
- Published research or industry contributions in recommendation systems or causal inference for ranking
- Experience with social network or user-generated content platforms with complex community-level dynamics
