Waabi is seeking a Senior or Staff Research Engineer to lead the deployment of generative AI within its multi-sensor simulation platform, Waabi World. Founded by Raquel Urtasun, the company develops technology for autonomous commercial trucks and robotaxis. In this remote position, the engineer will bridge the gap between research and production by optimizing neural and generative models, such as diffusion, vision foundation, and scene reconstruction models. The ideal candidate has experience transforming research code into high-performance, versioned production artifacts that operate efficiently alongside GPU renderers and autonomy stacks.
Key duties involve profiling models end-to-end, applying compilation and quantization techniques, ensuring numerical correctness and simulation realism, and creating shared deployment infrastructure. The role requires collaboration with multidisciplinary research teams to design hardware-friendly architectures. Compensation includes an annual salary between USD 200,000 and 275,000, equity incentive awards, and a performance bonus. Responsibilities
- Transition cutting-edge neural and generative models from research codebases into reproducible, versioned production artifacts
- Profile end-to-end model performance from graph execution to GPU kernels and memory usage
- Implement optimization strategies including model compilation, mixed precision, quantization, batching, and custom kernels
- Develop benchmarks and numerical parity tests to verify simulation realism and prevent performance regressions
- Design export, versioning, and model registry tooling for the sensor simulation group
- Collaborate early with research scientists to ensure new model architectures are exportable and hardware-friendly
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience developing production-quality software and deploying machine learning systems at scale
- Hands-on background with model optimization techniques such as TensorRT, torch.compile, ONNX, and quantization methods
- Proficiency in GPU profiling and writing or modifying custom CUDA or Triton kernels
- Ability to analyze modern architectures like vision transformers, diffusion, and flow-matching models for compute and memory efficiency
- Experience launching and debugging cloud-based GPU jobs across AWS, GCP, or equivalent platforms
