Job Description
Waabi is an AI company led by Raquel Urtasun that builds self-driving technology for commercial trucks and robotaxis. This remote, full-time role is for a product manager who will define the hardware platform carrying the Waabi Driver across trucks and robotaxis. The company describes it as its first dedicated hardware product position.
The product manager works between what the system must do and how it gets built. That means turning real-world situations raised by the public, riders, operations, safety and autonomy teams into exact requirements, validating concepts in mock-ups and on real vehicles, and collaborating with hardware engineers on high-level designs. The person also speaks for the product to OEM and supplier partners, staying involved until the platform works end to end.
Responsibilities include shaping requirements for future hardware generations and new vehicle platforms, based on what field and integration teams learn. The manager specifies how vehicles communicate with people nearby, including riders, police, emergency responders and passersby, and covers exterior signaling, in-cabin monitoring and security, passenger safety and resistance to vandalism. Industrial design and human-factors questions about screens, lights, reach and controls are tested physically in mock-ups and vehicles.
The candidate should have an engineering degree or hands-on equivalent, plus at least eight years in product, hardware or systems roles on physical products. Automotive, autonomy, robotics or complex consumer hardware experience is valuable. Writing testable requirements with acceptance criteria and verification methods is essential, and the person should be ready to spend time on site for mock-up reviews, vehicle trials and tests.
Responsibilities
- Own product requirements for the hardware platform across trucks and robotaxis, informed by field and integration data
- Specify how vehicles engage with riders, police, emergency crews and bystanders, including exterior signals, cabin monitoring, in-cabin safety and vandalism resistance
- Own the product definition phase for new hardware before engineering kicks off, pairing every requirement with pass/fail criteria and a verification plan
- Bring industrial design and human-factors input to screens, illumination, reach and control layouts, testing each physically
- Build trust with OEM and supplier partners and keep requirements consistent between organizations
- Speak for hardware in cross-functional choices about feasibility, cost and scope
Requirements
- Hardware grounding from an engineering degree in a field like mechanical, electrical or systems, or equivalent hands-on experience
- Eight-plus years of product, hardware or systems engineering experience on physical products
- History of moving hardware from concept through production, including how requirements shift between prototype and sample stages
- Industrial design training or close work with designers on shipped products, plus a solid feel for HMI and human-factors questions
- Skilled requirement writing that makes messy scenarios testable, with verification via test, analysis, inspection or demonstration
- Established ties with OEMs and suppliers, plus knowledge of their design, sourcing and delivery practices
- Trust, transparency and honesty as values in a safety-critical setting
- Ready to spend recurring time on site
Qualifications
- Experience with autonomous vehicles or robotaxi programs, especially rider experience, communication with road users and first responders
- Knowledge of automotive development routines like APQP and PPAP, and of sample phases A through C
- Understanding of functional safety and AV standards including ISO 26262, SOTIF and UL 4600, plus vehicle regulations
