Job Description

Canonical is hiring a Site Reliability and GitOps Engineer for its Information Systems team. The post is full-time and remote, open to people working from any time zone. The IS group keeps Canonical's IT production services running, including services relied on by more than 60 million Ubuntu users. The engineer's brief is to push operations automation further in both private and public clouds, using infrastructure as code, continuous delivery pipelines and Canonical's own automation tools.

Besides writing infrastructure as code, the engineer offers developers detailed feedback on how their products behave at scale, reports defects and occasionally submits patches, and co-designs solutions with other departments. Engineers sit in a worldwide SRE group that backs one another up and runs core services, networks and infrastructure. Duties include building monitoring and alerting with Prometheus, Grafana and Elasticsearch, holding final responsibility for urgent escalations, and securing protected time for bigger projects and for automating repetitive chores.

The posting describes an automation-first technologist who loves Linux, values peer review, unit testing and continuous delivery, and can diagnose issues from the kernel up to the web. Canonical has been remote-first since 2004 and holds in-person team sprints twice a year.

Responsibilities

  • Grow the IaC discipline inside IS by automating more and refining the processes
  • Make operations reusable and consistent across private and public clouds
  • Build features and strengthen the resilience and scale of cloud and container services
  • Keep core services, networks and infrastructure running and owned
  • Handle troubleshooting, capacity planning and performance investigations
  • Set up and look after monitoring and alerts for systems and services
  • Work with development teams on architecture, documentation, runbooks and procedures
  • Share expertise through design sessions and mentoring
  • Carry ultimate accountability for urgent, time-sensitive escalations

Requirements

  • Solid track record of expressing operations as code, with source control, code review and continuous delivery
  • Modern engineering practice, including peer review, unit testing, source control, CI/CD and Agile
  • Python development experience on large codebases
  • Working grasp of Linux networking, routing and firewall configuration
  • Comfort with Linux storage stacks spanning Ceph and databases
  • Hands-on experience running enterprise Linux servers
  • Wide-ranging understanding of cloud computing ideas and tools
  • Bachelor's degree or higher, preferably in computing or a related engineering discipline
  • Clear English across email, chat, video, voice and face-to-face contact

Qualifications

  • Drive to troubleshoot across the whole stack and to seek help when it makes sense
  • Flexibility and fast learning in quickly changing settings
  • Experience working in distributed teams
  • Interest in open source, particularly Ubuntu or Debian

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Bonus or commission tied to yearly performance
  • USD 2,000 per year learning and development budget
  • Annual pay review and recognition awards
  • Annual leave and maternity and paternity leave
  • Team member assistance and wellness platform
  • Two in-person team sprints per year
  • Opportunities to visit new locations, Priority Pass and upgraded long-haul travel
