Job Description
Canonical's App Stores team is looking for a Software Engineer to join a full-time, remote post. The group runs the backend services powering the Snap Store and the Charmhub marketplace, written mainly in Python with some Go. Current priorities include scaling production systems, broadening the software that can be shipped through the marketplaces, and improving support for IoT and large enterprise customers.
The engineer would carry features from specification to production, write tidy web service APIs used by command-line tools and browser front ends, and review designs and code from colleagues. The team treats automated testing as the path to faster, more reliable releases, and the engineer would join conversations that converge on workable answers with teammates spread across the globe.
The ideal person has built APIs and web applications meant for outside users in Python, favours backend and infrastructure work, and can model data for relational and non-relational stores and tune queries. Familiarity with Ubuntu as a build and deployment platform is expected. The role includes two to four weeks of travel for internal and external events.
Responsibilities
- Take new features and enhancements from specification through to live operation
- Build web service APIs that serve both CLI and browser clients
- Review code and technical designs written by others
- Work effectively with a geographically dispersed team
- Help discussions reach sound answers
- Keep services running well at scale
Requirements
- Demonstrated professional work building public-facing Python APIs and web apps
- Competence with relational and non-relational databases, including data design and query tuning
- Comfortable using Ubuntu for development and deployment
- Able to travel for two to four weeks at a time for events

- Wide technical background, leaning towards backend and infrastructure
- Strong academic results in computing, STEM or a similar subject
- Enthusiasm for clean APIs, rapid delivery and automated tests
- Inquisitive, adaptable, clear, accountable and self-motivated
