Job Description
Canonical has an opening for a Software Engineer in its cloud sustaining engineering group. This full-time position can be done entirely from home, and applicants may live anywhere in the world. The work is fast-moving troubleshooting on software-defined Linux infrastructure. It spans the stack from bare metal and KVM virtualisation through container tooling, storage and networking, then climbs through OpenStack and Kubernetes into the open source applications built on top.
The right candidate enjoys Linux and open source work, communicates clearly, and gets satisfaction from repairing faults in software that millions of people depend on. Engineers here need to be comfortable working at any layer above the kernel and writing code in several languages, because many problems can only be solved by changing upstream projects rather than adjusting configuration.
Canonical is a founder-led, profitable business that has been distributed and remote-first since its start in 2004. Engineers support enterprise customers, partners and the wider Ubuntu community, and the company gathers teams in person a handful of times each year in different parts of the world.

- Solve intricate customer issues involving Ubuntu, OpenStack, Kubernetes and other open source tools
- Write fixes, port patches to other releases and push them into upstream projects
- Examine and critique code written by teammates
- Stay in close contact with field, support and product engineering staff
- Contribute to upstream communities
- Set priorities and manage time sensibly across competing demands
- Refine team workflows, tooling and documentation
- Explain technical problems briefly and accurately

- Comfort using git repositories and branching
- Prepared to fly out for internal events, up to four times annually
Qualifications
- Interest in or background with Ubuntu, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, PostgreSQL, MongoDB or Debian packaging
- Top-tier results in secondary school and ideally at university
- Curious, adaptable, clear-spoken, responsible and self-driven
Core Skills
Benefits
- Yearly performance-linked bonus
