Job Description

Canonical has openings for Software Engineers on its Data Infrastructure team, which automates data platforms for multi-cloud and on-premise environments. The team handles a broad range of data technologies, from big data and NoSQL to cache layers, analytics and structured SQL engines. The work involves resilient, mission-critical distributed systems, and the aim is to offer the strongest automation for data platforms available. Positions range from junior to senior.

The team automates the day-to-day running of data platforms, including fault-tolerant replication, TLS, install steps and more. It also offers expertise on the data systems to other Canonical groups. Work concentrates on building and automating platform features, not on analysing the data stored in them. The engineer collaborates with a spread-out team, writes idiomatic Python for new features, and debugs issues while working in public with upstream projects. The role is remote, with global travel of two to four weeks per year for events.

The core requirements are proven hands-on Python development and experience with distributed systems. Candidates need a degree-level study in computing, a STEM subject or a closely related area. Useful extras include operating data platform technologies such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, OpenSearch, Kafka, Redis, Ranger, Atlas, Superset, Trino and YugabyteDB. Linux administration, cloud experience with OpenStack, and running Kubernetes for persistent data services are also helpful. Applicants in European, Middle Eastern and African time zones are considered.

Canonical is a global software company that publishes Ubuntu. It has more than 1,000 colleagues across over 70 countries and has been remote-first since 2004.

Responsibilities

  • Automate data platform operations, including replication, TLS and installation
  • Write clean, idiomatic Python to create new platform features
  • Debug issues and engage with upstream communities in public

Requirements

  • Demonstrated practical Python development experience

  • Willingness to travel up to four trips a year for internal events
  • Able to work remotely, with trips abroad totalling 2 to 4 weeks yearly for in-house and outside events

Qualifications

  • Degree-level study in computing, a STEM subject or a closely related area
  • Experience operating data platform technologies such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, OpenSearch, Kafka, Redis, Ranger, Atlas, Superset, Trino or YugabyteDB
  • Background in running Linux systems, handling packages and day-to-day operations
  • Experience with public or private cloud platforms such as OpenStack
  • Experience running Kubernetes clusters for persistent data services

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Remote working, with in-person team sprints twice a year
  • USD 2,000 yearly budget for learning and development
