Job Description
Zyte operates as a globally distributed organization specializing in web data extraction and infrastructure for startups and global enterprises. The company is currently hiring a Software Engineer (Edge - Networking & Fleet) to join its remote team.
In this position, you will work on the Edge Platform squad, which manages the control plane and data plane for a residential proxy network running on Windows, Android, and Linux. Your day-to-day duties will involve scaling the data plane to handle high request volumes, developing a Fleet Manager control plane, overseeing proxy paths and connectivity, managing networking elements like mTLS gRPC and NAT behavior, establishing reliability standards, and participating in the team's on-call rotation.
This opportunity is suited for a software engineer with extensive production experience in Rust, a background in distributed systems design, and deep knowledge of networking protocols. You will collaborate directly with a Team Lead, a Principal Engineer, and various engineering squads across Zyte.
Zyte maintains a remote-first work environment, allowing staff members to work from anywhere globally while offering flexible working hours, organizational trust, opportunities to attend conferences, and a collaborative multicultural setting.
Responsibilities
- Scale the data plane by evolving the command-and-control service into a horizontally scalable fetch scheduler supporting 50 to 100 million daily requests
- Design and build the Fleet Manager control plane to handle inventory, health checks, configurations, and software rollouts across provider adapters
- Operate and enhance the CONNECT proxy gateway and session handling capabilities on the edge
- Engineer networking mechanisms including mTLS gRPC, long-poll and streaming semantics, NAT behavior, and accurate bandwidth accounting
- Establish SLOs for availability, success, and latency, build metrics for peer monitoring, and execute blue/green rollouts safely
- Take part in the squad on-call rotation, lead incident post-mortems, and write Request For Comments documents for scheduling and fleet management
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of production Rust experience building and operating services end to end
- Demonstrated background in designing and operating distributed systems, control planes, schedulers, or stateful services at scale
- Deep networking knowledge covering TCP, TLS, HTTP, gRPC, long-lived connections, NAT, and lossy links
- Hands-on expertise building or operating forward proxies, proxy gateways, or residential and ISP proxy infrastructure
- Operational reliability experience involving SLOs, error budgets, custom observability, and leading production incidents
- Familiarity with cross-platform Rust development targeting Windows, Linux, and Android, alongside FFI boundaries
Qualifications
- Experience shipping Rust on Android, Windows, or macOS, or binding Rust to C/C++ via FFI
- Background in fleet or device management involving reconcilers, rollout controllers, or IoT and volunteer-computing fleets
- Understanding of anti-bot and fingerprinting mechanisms that classify traffic through TLS, HTTP, and IP signals
- Familiarity with the technical challenges associated with large-scale web scraping and crawling
- History of contributions to open-source projects focused on Rust, networking, or distributed systems
Core Skills
Benefits
- Remote-first work culture with the ability to work from anywhere in the world
- Flexible working hours and high organizational trust
- Opportunities to attend conferences and meet with colleagues globally
- Engagement with cutting-edge open-source technologies and tools
