Job Description

Affirm is seeking a Software Engineer II for backend work on its Online Storage team within Data and Storage Services. Eligible applicants must live in one of these provinces: Saskatchewan, Prince Edward Island, Ontario, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Manitoba, British Columbia, or Alberta. The job is remote.

The Online Storage team provides managed databases as a service so every Affirm product can persist information. Teams access these self-service through relational MySQL, DynamoDB key-value storage, TiDB distributed SQL, and Redis caching. The data ranges from financial transaction records to data science model outputs and new persistence requirements.

The engineer will focus on cache services built on Redis and Valkey. Responsibilities include moving clusters between versions with full ownership, planning capacity and shard layouts, configuring failover and replication, performing upgrades, and rolling changes out in stages with a way back. The role also replaces hand-run cache requests with audited self-service flows, sets reliability targets and alerts, and advises client teams on key naming, expiration, and timeouts.

Candidates should have at least two years as a software engineer, experience building backend services in Python or Kotlin, and production exposure to Redis or Valkey, or to a store with a similar in-memory design.

Responsibilities

  • Build and grow Redis and Valkey cache services, owning cluster migrations from start to finish
  • Bring cache clusters into production with capacity and shard planning, failover, upgrades, and staged rollouts
  • Replace manual cache requests using automated, audited self-service flows
  • Define service-level objectives and alerts covering hot-key spikes, memory strain, and replication lag
  • Work with client teams on caching design, including key structure, expiry times, consistency, and timeouts
  • Use on-call lessons to cut recurring operational toil

Requirements

  • Two or more years as a software engineer
  • Experience building and shipping backend services in Python or Kotlin
  • Grounding in distributed systems and familiarity with AWS, MySQL, Redis or Valkey, Terraform, and Kubernetes
  • Production work with Redis, Valkey, or a similar in-memory store, covering replication, durability, cluster mode, eviction policies, and how failures occur
  • Ability to analyze cache workloads: hit ratios, tail latency, hot-key pressure, cache stampedes, and how cache state compares with the primary database
  • Automation experience with Terraform, Kubernetes, and Python, favoring tested runbooks over manual procedures
  • On-call experience with a stateful service, from metrics through root cause to lasting fixes
  • Clear communication across a global engineering organization

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Full coverage of premiums for you and your dependents
  • Monthly allowance for tech setup and for health or wellness spending
  • Flexible leave and an extended holiday calendar
  • Discounted purchase program for company shares
  • Eligibility for equity awards
  • An in-person welcome session for newly hired staff
