Job Description

This role sits on the OpenStack Engineering team, which builds Charmed OpenStack and Ceph. These are open source Python charms that deploy and manage OpenStack and Ceph, bringing cloud platform technology to everyone from desktop users to bare-metal operators. The focus is on automating infrastructure as code for the software-defined data centre.

The engineer works with a distributed team to write high-quality code for new features, debug problems, and review peers' changes. Work includes making sure OpenStack and Ceph perform correctly on multiple processor architectures, and talking through ideas to reach good solutions. Trips abroad come up several times annually, typically lasting around a week each, so the person needs to be comfortable working in a global team and balancing open source community needs against those of large organisations.

Python experience is required, along with a degree-level study in computing, a STEM subject or a closely related area. Experience in at least two of these areas is welcome: Go, C, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Debian packaging, scalable web services, Ceph, AI/ML, LXC/LXD, QEMU/KVM, Kubernetes, OpenStack and Ubuntu Linux. Work on non-x86 platforms such as s390, arm64 and POWER, along with OpenStack, OVN, Open vSwitch or similar cloud tools, is a plus.

Canonical is a global software company behind Ubuntu, serving major public cloud and chip vendors. It is remote-first and has more than 1,000 colleagues in over 70 countries.
