Job Description
This Software Engineer job is part of a plan to change how companies run open source IT, across public clouds and their private data centres. The effort aims to grow a community around Python-based operations code for open source applications on Kubernetes, and to move Canonical's internal IS systems onto the same codebase. The IS function is meant to act as an extension of product engineering and to package the workloads customers run for automated operation on Kubernetes.
The engineer designs and ships open source operations code in Python, works across the Linux stack from the kernel and networking to storage and applications, and helps build dependable monitoring and alerting. Reliability thinking runs through the job, along with sound engineering and testing habits and agile practice. Engineers coach colleagues, add to a healthy engineering culture, and partner with other Canonical groups to keep services efficient and dependable.
The key requirements are Python fluency and some Kubernetes experience. Candidates should hold a computer science, STEM or related degree and have experience with Linux systems administration, packaging and operations. Hands-on work with one or more public clouds is needed, along with working knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes. Organised delivery of high-quality software is expected, and global travel of up to two weeks, once or twice a year, is part of the role.
