Job Description
Canonical is looking for a graduate-level Software Engineer to work on Ubuntu for public clouds. The engineer develops, tests and ships upgrades for the Ubuntu cloud images that run across major cloud platforms. Ubuntu is present on every public cloud, so stability and quality are paramount. The post involves close work with colleagues across Canonical and with key cloud partners.
Day to day, the engineer writes careful Python code backed by unit and functional checks, builds new features, fixes bugs, and reviews code from others. Communication with users is also part of the role, making sure their needs are understood. Since the images must behave across many releases and environments, interoperability is a constant concern. Care over corner cases, usability, docs and coordination with the community is important, because the audience runs from mission-critical deployments to hobbyists.
Strong Python ability is essential, and earlier work upstream in open-source Python projects count in an applicant's favour. Knowledge of apt, Debian packaging and general system administration helps, because the post involves building and managing Ubuntu images. Candidates should have a degree in computing, STEM or something closely similar, and show interest in or experience with at least two of: Ubuntu sysadmin, CI, end-system contract handling, Debian packaging, or public and on-premise cloud work. Occasional travel of two to four weeks a year may be needed for events.
Canonical is a global software company behind Ubuntu that operates with a remote-first workforce. It has more than 1,000 colleagues across over 70 countries.
