Job Description

Canonical is looking for a Software Engineer to join Sustaining Engineering, a fast-moving group that works on Linux-based, software-defined infrastructure. The position is aimed at people who love Linux and open source development and want a lasting career with the company. The group keeps mission-critical open source software healthy for enterprise customers. The job is remote, with teams across every time zone.

The engineer's territory runs from bare metal and KVM through containers, Ceph and Linux storage, OVS and OVN networking, up to OpenStack, Kubernetes and the community software running on top of them. Core work is fixing complicated customer issues in Ubuntu, Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes and nearby software. That involves writing bug fixes, backporting patches and joining upstream projects so the changes reach both upstream and Ubuntu. Work happens above the kernel layer and calls for fluency in several languages.

The position expects proven experience as a software engineer and a computer science or STEM background. Strong Linux skills are needed, along with knowledge of at least one of Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes or a comparable cloud platform. Development ability in C++, C, Go or Python on Linux is required, plus debugging with tools such as gdb and comfort with git repositories and branches. Engineers review code, work alongside the Field and Support teams, and may travel for up to 10% of their working time.

Canonical is a global software company behind Ubuntu. It serves major public cloud and silicon vendors and has more than 1,000 colleagues in over 70 countries.

Responsibilities

  • Untangle complex customer problems in Ubuntu, the kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes and other open source tools
  • Stay closely connected with Field, Support and product-engineering colleagues
  • Participate in upstream communities
  • Develop bug fixes and backports, and work upstream to have them accepted
  • Review code produced by fellow engineers
  • Apply good judgement to technical methods and keep priorities in order
  • Join team conversations about improving processes, tools and documentation

Requirements

  • Proven track record writing software professionally
  • Computer science, STEM or similar background
  • Solid Linux experience plus at least one of Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes or another cloud technology
  • Development-level skill in one or more of C++, C, Go and Python on Linux
  • Able to troubleshoot with debugging tools such as gdb
  • Comfortable with git repositories and branching
  • Willing to travel up to four trips a year for internal events

Qualifications

  • Strong academic record
  • Curiosity, flexibility, articulacy and accountability
  • Interest in or experience with Ubuntu kernel and userspace, Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, QEMU/KVM, Python, Go, C, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, LXC/LXD, Debian packaging and distributed systems

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Remote working, with in-person team sprints twice a year
  • USD 2,000 yearly budget for learning and development
  • Yearly pay review and recognition awards
