Job Description
This Software Engineer role joins the Server Certification group, which writes Python testing tools. Those tools exercise Ubuntu Server on current enterprise hardware so that users get a dependable experience on their machines. Because the work sits where hardware meets software, the best fit is a Python programmer who enjoys solving problems and knows hardware reasonably well.
The group represents Canonical to datacentre hardware partners and collaborates with chip makers, equipment manufacturers and internal teams to make Ubuntu work smoothly and securely from the first boot. Day-to-day tasks include contributing to open-source testing software such as Checkbox and Testflinger, diagnosing hardware compatibility, functional and performance issues, and guiding hardware partners through certification. The engineer also explains tools and roadmap to partners and helps internal staff with customer rollouts that use partner hardware.
Expect to need solid Python and shell scripting, knowledge of server-class hardware, and a working grasp of Ubuntu, virtualisation and cloud concepts. Being at ease in customer conversations is important. Experience with test automation, CI/CD and container and VM tooling like Docker, QEMU, KVM or LXC/LXD is welcome. The team works mainly across the Americas, from north to south, and the job is done from home, with travel two to four times a year for events.
The team describes a lively, quick-moving environment with plenty of room to learn and grow. Canonical is a remote-first software company behind Ubuntu.
