Job Description
This full-time remote job is a field deployment position with Google Fiber. The Special Projects Deployment Engineer II travels to regional markets and converts empty rooms into live network nodes, pairing physical build-out with hands-on troubleshooting.
On site, the engineer mounts and secures network gear, including routers, switches, firewalls and PDUs, and terminates copper and fiber runs with tidy labeling. Before any device is powered up, the engineer confirms power redundancy, circuit assignments and cooling. Afterward, standard test procedures check throughput, optical levels and failover routes before the location is handed to the network operations center.
Because remote engineering teams depend on whoever is physically present, the role is the main fallback when a site loses connectivity or visibility. The engineer uses optical test instruments to locate breaks, clean dirty connections and fix degraded optics.
This suits someone with a technical degree or practical field experience, who works well with limited supervision under deadlines and is comfortable with heavy travel, lifting equipment, climbing ladders and working in tight telecom spaces. The posting describes the work as offering the freedom of life on the road alongside the reward of physically building network infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Mount and secure switches, routers, firewall units, out-of-band admin gear and PDUs in racks
- Terminate copper (Cat6) and singlemode or multimode fiber, keeping cable runs tidy and labeled
- Check power redundancy, circuit assignments and cooling before energizing equipment
- Execute standard test procedures for line-rate throughput, optical power and failover before turnover to the NOC
- Locate and repair fiber breaks, dirty patches and degraded optics using OTDRs, power meters and fiber scopes
- Serve as the on-site troubleshooter when remote engineers lose connectivity or visibility at a location
Requirements
- Technical bachelor's degree, or equivalent practical experience
- Three years of independent field work in high-pressure settings with light supervision
- Working grasp of protocols such as TCP/IP, VLANs, subnetting and DHCP, plus basic routing policy and the OSI model
- Able to travel domestically 60-75 percent of the time
- Valid driver's license and a clean driving record
- Can lift up to 50 pounds of gear, climb ladders and work in cramped server rooms or telecom closets
Qualifications
- Background shifting from hands-on cabling to configuring enterprise network operating systems such as Junos or EOS
- Open to occasional off-hours or overnight maintenance windows
