Job Description
Veracyte operates as a global diagnostics enterprise centered on improving cancer care worldwide by supplying clinicians with valuable clinical and genomic data insights. The organization is hiring a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist to join its Bioinformatics and Data Science Team, focusing on the creation and optimization of regulated diagnostic products. This professional will steer computational design, development, and validation activities for new and existing assays, operating within multidisciplinary project cores.
The person in this role will build production-grade workflows for high-throughput next-generation sequencing data using containerized setups and Amazon Web Services. Responsibilities also include ensuring adherence to regulatory standards such as FDA, CAP/CLIA, and IVDR, creating statistical and machine learning methodologies for performance evaluation, and mentoring junior team members.
Candidates must possess a Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics, computer science, or a related field, accompanied by at least six to seven years of relevant experience. Strong proficiency in Python, AWS deployment, next-generation sequencing technologies, and quantitative transcriptomics is essential. The position offers a total compensation package including base pay between $150,000 and $189,000 annually, alongside potential discretionary bonuses, incentives, and restricted stock units, depending on location, experience, and other factors.
Responsibilities
- Lead bioinformatics design, development, and validation efforts for new and existing diagnostic assays.
- Coordinate planning, execution, and delivery within timeline and budget constraints as part of project core teams.
- Build scalable, production-ready workflows for high-throughput next-generation sequencing data using containerized environments and AWS.
- Coordinate with infrastructure and engineering teams to facilitate production pipeline deployment.
- Maintain regulatory compliance with standards like CAP/CLIA, FDA, and IVDR throughout the development lifecycle.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive development study design and analysis.
- Create statistical and machine learning approaches to evaluate assay performance and build optimization strategies.
- Share methodology, analysis results, and scientific conclusions with internal teams, stakeholders, and external collaborators.
- Supply technical documentation and validation reports to support regulatory audits and submissions.
- Mentor and provide scientific guidance to junior bioinformatics team members.
Requirements
- Hold a PhD or MS degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, biostatistics, statistics, or a related data science discipline.
- Demonstrate a minimum of 6 to 7 years of background in bioinformatics analysis, algorithm development, and pipeline implementation.
- Show a comprehensive understanding of next-generation sequencing technologies and library preparation methods.
- Prove proficiency in quantitative transcriptomics from expression microarray or next-generation sequencing data in human biology.
- Demonstrate capability in machine learning, algorithm creation, novel methodology development, and computational method benchmarking.
- Exhibit proven experience building and deploying bioinformatics pipelines within AWS environments.
- Display strong proficiency in Python alongside testing frameworks and software development lifecycle best practices.
Qualifications
- Demonstrate a track record of partnering closely with wet lab scientists on iterative experiment design, execution, and interpretation.
- Show proficiency in secondary analysis, genomics, sequence analysis, and variant calling.
- Possess a strong grasp of germline and somatic mutation processes leading to complex variation and genome-wide biomarkers.
- Hold working knowledge of the R programming language.
- Bring experience working with relational and non-relational database technologies.
