Job Description

Hims & Hers operates a digital health and wellness platform that connects consumers with personalized care, ranging from initial diagnosis to treatment and delivery. Listed publicly on the NYSE under the ticker HIMS, the organization focuses on making healthcare more accessible and affordable. The company is currently hiring a remote-based Sr. Director of Machine Learning to guide the engineering teams developing core artificial intelligence services.

This leadership position centers on the applied side of the artificial intelligence portfolio. The selected candidate will oversee large language model applications that manage clinical intake, provider assistance, operational workflows, and personalization, alongside proprietary deep learning models used for medical and treatment recommendations. Responsibilities include shaping technical strategy, scaling engineering teams, establishing operational standards, and collaborating closely with clinical, product, legal, and security departments. The role requires balancing model quality with latency and cost while ensuring patient and provider safety remain central to every initiative.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor applied scientists, machine learning engineers, and production engineers through the full lifecycle of artificial intelligence services
  • Define the strategy for utilizing frontier large language models, including retrieval, prompt design, agentic workflows, and cost management
  • Direct the creation of validation harnesses, guardrails, and orchestration layers to guarantee dependable and auditable outputs
  • Oversee the creation of custom classical and deep learning models for clinical and recommendation use cases
  • Establish production standards covering service level objectives, graceful failure handling, and rollout strategies
  • Collaborate with Clinical and Medical Affairs to maintain human-in-the-loop oversight and validation for clinically-facing models
  • Partner with evaluation teams to define metrics, feedback loops, and annotation pipelines
  • Work alongside product, engineering, security, and compliance teams to translate business and clinical challenges into executed projects
  • Set technical standards for experimentation, model documentation, reproducibility, and responsible artificial intelligence
  • Shape multi-year roadmap investments and represent technical strategy to executive leadership

Requirements

  • Fourteen or more years of experience spanning software engineering and machine learning
  • Eight or more years leading machine learning teams, including management experience over senior technical leads or other managers
  • Demonstrated history of deploying scaled machine learning products to production environments and supporting them operationally
  • Strong technical depth in modern large language model development, covering retrieval-augmented generation, fine-tuning, evaluation, and agent frameworks
  • Practical background in training and deploying deep learning models such as ranking, classification, or recommendation systems
  • Proficiency in software architecture, service boundaries, data flows, failure modes, and cost optimization
  • Ability to manage trade-offs between model performance, latency, cost, and operational complexity
  • Experience navigating ambiguity to turn complex, high-level problems into operational systems

Qualifications

  • Experience working in healthcare, digital health, or other regulated industries
  • Background with safety-critical machine learning systems, clinical natural language processing, or clinical decision support tools
