Job Description
Serve Robotics is an urban delivery enterprise that utilizes sidewalk robots to handle commercial orders, operating fleets across Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas, Atlanta, and Chicago. The organization brings together technology veterans in hardware, software, and design to resolve real-world challenges through robotics, computer vision, and machine learning. To support this mission, Serve Robotics is hiring a Sr. Embedded Software Engineer, Robotics Platform on a full-time basis.
This position suits an experienced developer who wants to build scalable infrastructure for autonomous sidewalk delivery machines. In this capacity, the professional will engineer, test, and maintain application frameworks and middleware using modern C++ on embedded Linux. The role involves overseeing major platform elements from technical conception through production operation across the active robot fleet. Candidates will interact closely with systems engineering and autonomy teams to handle risk assessments, system architecture, and fault-handling strategies.
The role balances practical programming with systems-level debugging and cross-functional coordination. The professional will construct instrumentation, logs, and benchmarks to track system health and software performance. Additionally, the engineer will conduct technical reviews, establish engineering standards, and mentor colleagues. Occasional onsite participation may be needed for hardware integration, testing, troubleshooting, or validation tasks.
Responsibilities
- Design, test, and maintain application frameworks and robotics middleware using modern C++ on embedded Linux
- Manage significant platform components from technical design through validation, deployment, and operation
- Partner with internal teams to identify performance, reliability, and developer experience issues and implement reusable solutions
- Collaborate with systems engineering and autonomy teams on software architecture, risk assessments, and failure analysis
- Convert system-level reliability and safety requirements into concrete software behaviors and interfaces
- Create benchmarks, logging, tracing, and fleet-level metrics to monitor software performance and system health
- Resolve complex system-level problems related to networking, concurrency, scheduling, and resource constraints
- Evaluate technical tradeoffs to enhance the scalability, maintainability, and reliability of the robotics platform
- Lead code and design reviews while contributing to engineering standards and technical documentation
- Provide technical mentorship and guidance to fellow engineers through collaborative problem solving
Requirements
- Five or more years of professional software engineering experience
- Significant experience developing production software in modern C++ including C++17 and newer
- Experience developing and debugging systems software in embedded Linux environments
- Strong understanding of concurrency, multithreaded programming, synchronization, and interprocess communication
- Experience designing software for high-reliability, real-time, safety-related, or latency-sensitive systems
- Experience profiling and optimizing embedded software for resource utilization and performance
- Demonstrated ability to independently own complex software components through the complete lifecycle
- Strong troubleshooting skills to diagnose complex issues across hardware and software boundaries
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for cross-functional collaboration
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
- Experience building middleware for autonomous vehicles, robotics, or similar complex systems
- Experience deploying production software on NVIDIA Jetson or comparable embedded computing platforms
- Familiarity with Linux internals, device interfaces, scheduling, and resource management
- Experience with functional safety, fault-tolerant architecture, or failure-mode analysis
- Experience with serialization technologies, RPC frameworks, networking, or distributed systems
- Experience developing telemetry, diagnostics, or health monitoring capabilities for distributed fleets
- Experience integrating software with embedded hardware, sensors, or other robotic components
