Acquia is seeking a Staff AI Engineer to join its Data and Intelligence function. Acquia provides a digital experience platform built on open-source Drupal, combining content management, digital asset management, and product information management to help global organizations build digital products.
In this hands-on engineering position, the chosen professional will develop retrieval, graph, and inference layers over a large data platform, creating agentic and deterministic systems that translate data signals into actionable workflows. The remit spans observability, the core data platform, and intelligence, requiring adaptability as company priorities shift. The ideal candidate maintains strong programming fundamentals, approaches problem-solving with an orchestrative mindset, and embraces AI-augmented processes to build shared capabilities that multiple teams rely on.
Responsibilities
- Write and ship production AI code daily
- Lead initiatives for rapid customer context retrieval utilizing semantic retrieval, indexing, and knowledge graph approaches
- Construct the inference and signal layer by connecting models and processors to an Iceberg-based lakehouse
- Transform detected conditions such as usage mismatches, churn risks, and expansion opportunities into automated workflows
- Select appropriate workloads among large models, fine-tuned models, and deterministic code while managing inference costs
- Establish evaluation and observability for AI systems to verify signals before action is taken
- Define patterns for other engineering teams and collaborate with business and technical leaders to deliver shipped systems
Requirements
- Over 8 years of total software engineering experience
- Minimum of 3 years of experience deploying AI or ML systems to production
- Proficiency in at least one primary programming language used for AI and data tasks, specifically Python
- Advanced SQL capabilities and familiarity with transformation layers like dbt and distributed query engines over data lakehouse or warehouse storage
- Practical background in production retrieval, context engineering, embeddings, vector search, and graph retrieval
- Experience building agentic systems and durable workflows featuring tool calling, memory, state management, and human-in-the-loop patterns
- Familiarity with AI evaluation and observability including tracing and dataset-driven testing
- Cloud deployment background involving containerized services and AWS
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
- Background in establishing shared data or machine learning capabilities for other teams
- Experience developing small and fine-tuned models for task-specific scalability
- Observability data fluency encompassing OpenTelemetry, logs, metrics, and high-volume traces
- Knowledge of data governance principles including lineage, access control, and data residency
- Familiarity with enterprise SaaS, CMS, and Drupal-based digital experience platforms
- Proficiency in agentic development workflows and AI-assisted coding tools
