Instacart is looking for a Staff Experience Designer to join its Core Experience team and lead design initiatives across multiple in-app touchpoints for its online grocery ecosystem. Operating under a remote Flex First work model, the company connects millions of users with essential grocery and household goods through a four-sided marketplace serving consumers, shoppers, retailers, and advertisers. This high-impact position suits a seasoned design professional eager to shape end-to-end customer journeys, agentic conversational interfaces, and personalized experiences that build lasting user habits.
In this role, you will collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, Marketing, Brand, Data Science, and Research teams. You will drive consumer-facing product experiences, establish journey frameworks for subscription adoption and household management, and utilize AI-assisted prototyping alongside traditional design tools. The ideal candidate will combine deep expertise in content, visual, and UX design with strong strategic storytelling and a passion for human behavior in retail and food spaces.
Responsibilities
- Lead consumer-facing product experiences to build personalized user journeys and add value to the core grocery offering
- Develop end-to-end experience design briefs across various modalities, including agentic interfaces
- Craft narratives, value propositions, and naming conventions alongside strategy documents, storyboards, and internal decks
- Define experience frameworks mapping crucial user journeys like early repeat patterns, subscription adoption, and household management
- Establish information architecture, hierarchy, and content structures across surfaces to ensure customer comprehension
- Codify functional and emotional experiential principles and translate them into scalable interaction rules and content patterns
- Apply AI-assisted prototyping and concept development that align with the brand positioning and design system
- Design for pacing, visual clarity, and density across modules, carousels, and key placements
- Partner with or lead research efforts to uncover customer insights regarding shopping routines and lifecycle evolution
- Mentor cross-functional partners to encourage journey-led and emotion-focused thinking across project pods
Requirements
- Over 15 years of experience designing digital products and consumer-facing experiences across mobile and web
- Portfolio highlighting complex, multi-step journeys, end-to-end flows, and marketing channels including campaigns, CRM, and social
- Demonstrated fluency and depth in at least two design languages out of content design, visual design, UX product design, design strategy, and design research
- Strong focus on consistency, cohesion, continuity, comprehension, and attention to design system details
- Proven capability to collaborate with business and product leaders to guide multiple design disciplines through launches and executive reviews
- Exceptional communication skills with strengths in structured strategic storytelling, presentation design, and decision-making frameworks
- Experience navigating ambiguous environments and multi-stakeholder settings to align teams
- Proficiency in Figma and Google Slides, alongside an interest in generative tools like Claude Code, Cursor, Loveable, and ChatGPT
Qualifications
- Background in designing for e-commerce, marketplaces, grocery, CPG, or membership and subscription products
- Experience shaping onboarding, retention, and activation journeys that build long-term loyalty and personalization
- Familiarity with domains such as meal planning, health goals, nutrition, allergy management, and household grocery behavior
- Experience designing high-visibility surfaces like personalized feeds, home pages, and merchandising placements
- History of evolving large-scale design systems while accommodating AI- and human-produced flows
- Experience influencing outcomes and working with distributed teams across time zones without direct authority
