Job Description
Natera's cell-free DNA testing targets cancer, women's health and organ conditions. Its Research group is building assays that can detect numerous cancers from a single blood sample. This staff-level post, centered on machine learning and bioinformatics, focuses on the models at the core of that effort. The person works with extensive multi-modal genomic data from patient studies, carrying novel techniques from early prototype into scalable software to clinical validation.
This is a full-time, remote role within the United States. The scientist would lead creation of new statistical and ML techniques for detecting cancer signals in multi-modal genomic data, and develop models that are interpretable and well calibrated, with a high bar for uncertainty and reproducibility. Work includes prototyping, testing and productionizing models on scalable infrastructure, owning major deliverables within larger efforts, and helping shape the research roadmap. The role also involves designing experiments with biologists and clinical specialists, raising the standard through code and design reviews, and turning results into clear narratives for varied audiences.
The posting wants a doctorate in a quantitative field such as computer science, mathematics or bioinformatics, with six to twelve years of experience after it. Candidates need practical experience creating new statistical or machine learning methods for complicated biological data, a history of technical leadership in method development, and deep knowledge of neural-network methods and multimodal foundation models. Python fluency with scientific tools is required. The role includes coaching junior scientists and fostering a culture of curiosity, teamwork and rigorous science.
Responsibilities
- Drive new statistical and machine learning approaches to cancer signal detection
- Design models that are interpretable, well calibrated and reproducible
- Build, test and productionize ML systems on scalable infrastructure
- Own critical deliverables inside larger projects and help chart the research direction
- Plan experiments and validation studies with biologists and clinicians
- Coach junior scientists and lead reviews of code and design across projects
Requirements
- Doctorate in a quantitative field such as computer science, mathematics or bioinformatics, with six to twelve years since the PhD
- Hands-on work building new statistical or ML methods for complex biological data
- Record of technical leadership in method-development projects
- Strong grasp of neural-network methods and multimodal foundation models
- Python proficiency with scientific computing libraries
- Clear communication and a collaborative working style across teams
Qualifications
- Background with methylation profiles and other epigenetic datasets
- Exposure to cfDNA work and liquid biopsy specimens
- Grounding in cancer genomics or diagnostic work
- Hands-on use of multimodal foundation models on biological data
Core Skills
Benefits
- Health, dental, eye, life and disability coverage for eligible staff and their families
- Free testing for staff and immediate family, plus fertility care support
- Pregnancy and baby bonding leave, and a 401(k) plan
- Commuter benefits and an employee referral scheme
