Job Description

Affirm operates a financial platform designed to give consumers predictable payment alternatives without hidden fees or unexpected charges. As part of the Financial Platforms division, the Order Platform team functions as a senior, high-impact unit responsible for managing post-checkout processes such as orders, captures, refunds, and settlements. This remote position is structured for a Staff Software Engineer to establish technical strategies spanning annual timelines, direct major migration efforts, and consolidate internal infrastructure behind post-checkout APIs.

This role fits an experienced technical leader who enjoys untangling ambiguous architectural challenges and guiding senior engineering groups. Practitioners in this position will set design standards, mentor colleagues through code reviews and technical presentations, and balance operational sustainability with continuous product innovation. The job requires active partnership alongside product management, design, and analytics departments to guarantee manageable risks and robust domain boundaries.

Affirm maintains a remote-first operating model enabling staff to work from virtually anywhere inside the employment country, though new hires participate in an initial in-person onboarding program. Compensation includes a base salary structured by geographic location, equity awards, employee stock purchase options, monthly stipends for technology and wellness expenses, and fully covered medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and their families.

Responsibilities

  • Formulate a year-long technical strategy for the team and connect it to business-critical initiatives
  • Partner with product management, design, and analytics functions to manage technical trade-offs and risks
  • Establish technical solutions and operational workflows that serve as a force multiplier for the team
  • Oversee operational availability by implementing monitoring, alerting, triage rotations, testing, and playbooks
  • Promote code review and design standards internally and across the broader engineering organization
  • Guide and develop engineering talent through structured feedback and leading by example

Requirements

  • Possess at least 8 years of experience designing, launching, and building scalable backend systems using languages like Kotlin or Python
  • Demonstrate a track record of developing highly available distributed systems with tools like Kubernetes, AWS, MySQL, and Spark
  • Show analytical expertise in designing services with defined API boundaries, consistency handling, and idempotency, ideally within commerce, payments, or ledger domains
  • Bring experience delivering major system components, features, or deprecations through defined execution plans and readable code
  • Communicate effectively with global engineering teams using strong verbal and written skills

Qualifications

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in a related technical discipline, or possess equivalent practical experience

Core Skills

Benefits

  • 100% subsidized medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and their dependents
  • Monthly stipends to support technology setups, health, and wellness choices

  • Employee stock purchase plan allowing discounted stock purchases
  • Remote-first work environment with flexible location options
