Pinterest operates an online platform designed to help people around the world discover ideas, plan projects, and find inspiration. The company is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for its Capacity Engineering team to manage and optimize one of the largest cloud-native infrastructures globally. In this individual contributor position, the engineer will direct performance and efficiency initiatives for a core segment of capacity engineering, maintaining high visibility across the entire engineering organization and company leadership. The role suits a technical professional experienced in large-scale distributed systems who can work with shared environments like Kubernetes, utilize profiling tooling to diagnose complex issues, and integrate artificial intelligence to scale operational impact. Employees in this position are required to work on-site for collaborative purposes one to two times per month, though candidates can be located anywhere in the United States. Pinterest evaluates candidates on both foundational abilities and how effectively they collaborate with artificial intelligence during the hiring process.
Responsibilities
- Drive efficiency improvements in large-scale shared environments such as Kubernetes through scheduling optimization, overhead reduction, and resource isolation
- Enhance the performance and efficiency of large-scale distributed systems supporting Pinterest infrastructure
- Utilize profiling and performance tooling to identify root causes of efficiency problems, propose solutions, and collaborate with owning teams to implement and validate them
- Partner with Infrastructure Engineering and SRE teams to deliver resilient, secure, and efficient technical foundations
- Employ artificial intelligence to scale personal and team impact by accelerating investigations, building self-serve tooling, and iterating on optimization approaches
Requirements
- Deep understanding of infrastructure capacity, performance, and hardware fundamentals including CPU, memory, operating system scheduling, and input/output
- Demonstrated experience leading efficiency initiatives at scale on Kubernetes or other large-scale shared infrastructure
- Strong technical and performance engineering skills with fluency in profiling tools such as perf and async-profiler
- Experience building and managing highly available distributed applications at scale
- Proficiency in software development languages including Java, Python, and C++
- Strong communication skills for conveying complex technical issues
- Experience working with cloud environments such as AWS
- Demonstrated ability to use artificial intelligence to improve workflow speed and quality while maintaining accountability for final decisions
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in computer science, a related field, or equivalent experience
- Hands-on experience with large cloud-native multi-tenant platforms at internet scale
