Job Description
Instacart operates an essential grocery delivery service that connects customers with household goods while offering earnings opportunities for personal shoppers. The company embraces a Flex First remote work model, allowing staff to choose their workspace from home, an office, or other locations while gathering for periodic in-person events.
As a Staff Software Engineer focused on Developer Experience, the selected professional will guide the technical path for developer infrastructure utilized by over a thousand engineers. This hands-on position involves writing code, establishing architectural standards, and shaping tooling related to AI-assisted coding, continuous integration pipelines, pre-production environments, and version control systems. The mandate centers on maximizing developer velocity, reducing feedback loop latency, and enhancing overall engineering efficiency.
This opportunity fits an experienced technical leader who enjoys driving cross-team migrations, mentoring peers, and relying on data to prioritize infrastructure investments. Qualified candidates based in eligible Canadian provinces—specifically Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, and Nova Scotia—are welcome to apply for this fully remote position.
Responsibilities
- Lead the technical strategy for local and remote development environments, encompassing ephemeral systems and image-based provisioning.
- Oversee continuous integration pipeline infrastructure, commit-to-feedback loops, reliability, and the mitigation of flaky tests.
- Manage the evolution of pre-production staging environments and support parallel end-to-end validation for both humans and artificial intelligence agents.
- Ensure the resilience and scalability of git operations within a monorepo setup while establishing disaster recovery procedures.
- Integrate artificial intelligence developer tooling into workflows, including automated code reviews and agentic development platforms.
- Design and execute multi-quarter projects aimed at optimizing developer velocity and system reliability.
- Define, instrument, and track developer experience metrics to guide strategic engineering investments.
- Collaborate across infrastructure and product units to deploy platform changes smoothly.
- Mentor team members and broader engineering staff while acting as a technical representative for developer infrastructure.
Requirements
- Bring over 10 years of software development experience.
- Demonstrate hands-on expertise operating continuous integration and continuous deployment platforms at scale, such as Buildkite, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or CircleCI.
- Show a proven history of building or managing developer platforms, internal Platform-as-a-Service tools, or remote environments.
- Provide a track record of driving cross-team technical initiatives that measurably improved developer velocity or system stability.
- Possess experience with cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS, alongside containerization with Docker and orchestration via Kubernetes or ECS.
- Understand the infrastructure challenges associated with managing large monorepos and git at scale.
Qualifications
- Hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or possess equivalent practical experience.
- Have prior experience owning or evolving developer environment platforms utilized across a large organization.
- Demonstrate background in stabilizing staging environments at scale with established service-owner accountability and service-level agreements.
- Familiarity with artificial intelligence developer tooling, including code review assistants and async agentic workflows.
- Experience defining and instrumenting metrics related to developer productivity and feedback loop duration.
- Background working at high-growth companies that operate developer infrastructure for large engineering teams.
Core Skills
Benefits
