Job Description
Mercury, a fintech company that provides banking services through Choice Financial Group and Column N.A., is seeking a remote Staff Software Engineer for its Services Platform. As the organization transitions away from a core Haskell monolith toward independent microservices, the engineering team requires a technical owner to establish standard practices for building, deploying, and operating services.
This position suits an infrastructure professional with deep technical expertise who enjoys balancing architectural design with organizational influence. The role involves creating a unified deployment path, shaping service runtime architecture with Kubernetes, and designing self-service observability tools so product engineers can debug their systems independently. The incoming engineer will act as a trailblazer, setting foundational standards that future hires will follow while partnering closely with security, release engineering, and product groups.
Total compensation includes a competitive base salary, equity through stock options or RSUs, and benefits. Target base salary ranges are $239,000 to $298,800 USD for US remote employees and $225,900 to $282,400 CAD for Canadian remote employees, determined by experience, expertise, geographic location, and internal equity.
Responsibilities
- Define and build the internal platform used by engineers to deploy, operate, and evolve services
- Own the strategy for the service ecosystem covering identity, authentication, discovery, and communication
- Collaborate with release engineering and product stakeholders to establish a standardized deployment path with robust defaults for rollouts, rollbacks, configuration, secrets, and operational safety
- Evolve the service runtime architecture, including Kubernetes utilization, while maintaining the health of existing services
- Build self-service observability solutions enabling product engineers to understand and debug systems autonomously
- Partner with security, release engineering, and product teams to ensure infrastructure complies with financial regulations
- Identify critical gaps in the services ecosystem and implement pragmatic improvements
- Establish patterns that allow the company to support numerous additional services without a linear increase in operational complexity
- Mentor engineers and guide infrastructure strategy beyond direct systems ownership
Requirements
- Extensive experience operating Kubernetes in production environments
- Strong instincts regarding deployment architecture, failure modes, and system migrations
- Background in designing or materially owning service-to-service authentication, workload identity, service discovery, service mesh, or related distributed-systems infrastructure
- Experience building self-service observability or operational tooling for application engineers
- Demonstrated ability to align cross-functional teams with differing goals without generating unnecessary friction
- Clear communication skills regarding technical tradeoffs and underlying decisions
Qualifications
- Experience building an internal developer platform or service infrastructure at a scaled engineering organization
