Rad AI is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead its speech technology initiatives. The employer develops artificial intelligence solutions designed to transform radiology, decrease physician burnout, and enhance patient care. In this fully remote position across the United States, the successful candidate will guide technical strategy, mentor engineering personnel, and collaborate with research, product, and infrastructure teams to scale a high-performance speech platform.
The person in this role will build and refine real-time audio streaming capabilities within a React and TypeScript web application, while designing distributed Python backend services. This position involves operationalizing speech models, enhancing production reliability with observability platforms, and shipping features within a compliant healthcare technology environment. Ideal candidates bring extensive experience in multimedia software development, full-stack engineering proficiency in Python and TypeScript, and a history of technical leadership on distributed teams.
Responsibilities
- Lead the speech engineering function by setting technical direction and guiding architectural decisions
- Coach and mentor engineers across the team
- Collaborate with research scientists to transition speech models from evaluation into production
- Develop and evolve real-time audio streaming and capture for the TypeScript and React web application
- Design and maintain distributed Python backend services
- Contribute to the infrastructure supporting speech systems
- Troubleshoot and optimize production performance and reliability utilizing observability tools
- Coordinate with product, user experience, and customer success teams to deliver features in a HIPAA-compliant setting
Requirements
- Seven or more years of professional experience building audio or multimedia software
- Robust full-stack capabilities including deep proficiency in TypeScript, React, and Python
- Familiarity with browser audio APIs such as Web Audio and AudioWorklet
- Direct experience with real-time audio streaming and WebSockets for client-server communication
- Background in designing and operating distributed systems
- Familiarity with debugging production problems using monitoring and observability solutions
- Demonstrated technical leadership including team mentorship and driving architectural choices
- Strong unit and integration testing practices coupled with distributed team experience
Qualifications
- Familiarity with FastAPI, SQLAlchemy, and PostgreSQL
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code, specifically Terraform
- Background in automatic speech recognition, speech-to-text, or machine learning-driven products from evaluation to monitoring
- Familiarity with spec-driven development and AI-assisted engineering instruments like Claude Code
- Experience working within HIPAA-compliant environments, particularly HL7 and FHIR
- Prior startup experience
- Experience implementing third-party authentication integrations such as Auth0
- Knowledge of relational, document-based, and large-scale data storage paradigms
