Appen is hiring a remote Strategic Project Lead - Multimodal AI to support frontier artificial intelligence development by managing complex data programs for top AI companies. The position involves steering end-to-end project delivery across timelines, budgets, staffing, and risk management while translating client needs into data collection workflows and quality standards. Appen has maintained a presence in AI training data for more than 30 years, specializing in human-generated data for generative AI, large language models, computer vision, and speech recognition.

Responsibilities
- Manage complete project delivery cycles including scope, schedules, financial budgets, staffing, and risk mitigation
- Lead client interactions, progress reporting, planning sessions, and issue escalations
- Convert technical specifications into structured data collection procedures, labeling guidelines, tooling, and quality benchmarks
- Establish quality metrics and criteria for accepting multimodal data and annotation outputs
- Track delivery performance, troubleshoot dataset issues, and clarify vague client specifications
- Provide guidance regarding project feasibility, data collection techniques, and tool selection using domain expertise
- Create standardized standard operating procedures, documentation, and quality assurance frameworks
- Mentor operations personnel and assist with scoping, pilot initiatives, and emerging multimodal capabilities
Requirements
- 1 to 2 years or more of background in AI data operations, delivery management, or project coordination
- Familiarity with at least one multimodal data workflow utilizing video, images, sensor data, 3D information, or robotics
- Demonstrated capability in coordinating workstreams, stakeholder management, and client communication
- Familiarity with quality assurance methodologies, annotation processes, and data quality principles
- Aptitude for translating project goals into explicit collection workflows and quality criteria
- Strong problem-solving abilities and capacity to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrated interest in current AI advancements such as spatial AI, embodied AI, and multimodal models
Qualifications
- Experience handling image, video, point cloud, 3D data, or sensor information annotation
- Familiarity with real-world perception workflows or robotics data gathering
- Exposure to 2D or 3D tracking, segmentation, labeling, or structured annotation assignments
- Background working with embodied AI, spatial AI, or autonomous systems
- Bilingual skills, specifically proficiency in German or a Nordic language
