Job Description

Canonical is hiring a full-time Ubuntu Core Software Engineer for a remote role in the EMEA region. Ubuntu Core is an embedded Linux system that the company presents as compact, hardened and easy to keep updated for connected devices.

The work is low-level: the boot flow, bootloaders, how storage is partitioned, device tree files, the kernel and background services. Code must function across ARM, RISC-V and x86 processors. The team also designs robust mechanisms for recovering devices in the field, which manufacturers rely on when managing large fleets of different equipment. Applications the posting highlights include IoT, cars and aircraft.

The post suits someone who enjoys open source, Linux, security and developer experience, and who can write tested code, track down system-level faults and review teammates' work. Experience with Linux-capable boards such as the Raspberry Pi is noted as a plus, as is familiarity with the low-level and security topics the posting lists.

Canonical publishes Ubuntu, a platform the company links to public cloud, data science, AI and IoT. Staff work from home and travel abroad two to four times a year for both internal and external events.

Responsibilities

  • Build software that runs across ARM, RISC-V and x86 CPUs
  • Produce well-tested code for new capabilities, including unit tests
  • Investigate Linux system-level faults and write the fixes
  • Connect different bootloaders into the stack and keep gadget snaps up to date
  • Review colleagues' code and talk through design choices
  • Work closely with a team spread across regions
  • Attend internal and external events abroad as needed, two to four times annually

Requirements

  • Real passion for technology and for working alongside capable people
  • Inquisitive, adaptable, clear and accountable, with well-developed soft skills
  • Bachelor-level qualification or similar in a computing or engineering discipline
  • Practical experience with C or Go, plus shell scripting
  • Good grasp of Linux, ideally a current GNU/Linux distribution such as Debian or Ubuntu
  • Personal or work experience with Linux-capable boards, for example the Raspberry Pi
  • Based within the EMEA region

Qualifications

  • Interest in or work with ARM and x86 bootloaders such as piboot, U-Boot or GRUB-UEFI
  • Understanding of systemd units, udev, initrd or graphics
  • Familiarity with OS-level firmware daemons and command-line tools
  • Experience securing Linux with TPM, full disk encryption, LUKS or HSMs
  • Yocto knowledge
