Job Description

This full-time, globally remote role is for a web and UI engineer who builds data-rich, reliable user experiences. The engineer works on front-ends written in JavaScript, CSS, React and Flutter, which serve as the company's enterprise products and represent it to users. The organization publishes Ubuntu and operates as a founder-led, profitable company with more than 1,100 colleagues in over 75 countries.

A central team maintains Vanilla Framework, a React-based toolkit and presentation layer that keeps products and sites consistent. The engineer contributes to that work, helps open-source projects build fast and accessible interfaces that adapt to different layouts, and designs and uses REST APIs with care. Flutter is being adopted to unify desktop and web development, so the role spans both web and Ubuntu engineering work in that area.

Day-to-day duties include designing and building well-tested, documented software for web technologies or Flutter, fixing issues that users report, taking part in code and architecture reviews, and writing technical documentation. The engineer also helps operate the services the team deploys and promotes the technical quality of the product.

The posting asks for an excellent academic record, a computer science or STEM background (or a clearly explained alternative path), and a history of exceeding expectations and meeting schedules. Experience with TypeScript, React or Flutter, attention to accessibility and performance, and familiarity with Linux are sought.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement well-tested, documented web or Flutter software
  • Investigate and fix issues that users encounter
  • Take part in code and architecture reviews
  • Help shape technical specifications together with community members and teammates
  • Write and improve technical documentation
  • Deploy and operate the services the team builds
  • Advocate for the product through technical contributions

Requirements

  • Strong academic results from school and university study
  • A bachelor-level degree in computer science or a STEM field, or a clearly explained alternative path
  • Track record of exceeding expectations and delivering on schedule
  • Hands-on experience producing well-engineered web code
  • Experience with and interest in TypeScript, React or Flutter
  • Care for accessibility and speed in interfaces
  • Clear written and spoken English
  • Linux experience, with Debian or Ubuntu a plus

Qualifications

  • Experience with container technology such as LXD, Docker or Kubernetes
  • Attention to detail in user-centric interface work
  • Performance engineering or security experience
  • REST API design and governance
