Graduate Trainee Programmes in Ghana 2026/27: When They Open and How to Apply

Graduate trainee programmes in Ghana are structured one- to two-year schemes that hire recent graduates, usually after National Service, and train them through job rotations before placing them in permanent roles. The best-known schemes — run by banks such as Stanbic Bank Ghana and FirstBank, by SEO Africa with partner firms, by mining companies such as Gold Fields, and by MTN — mostly take applications between March and June. Most 2026 windows have now closed, so the smart move for late 2026 is to get your documents and grades ready for the 2027 rounds.
Graduate trainee programmes in Ghana at a glance
Typical applicants: fresh graduates who have finished, or are about to finish, National Service.
Common grade bar: Second Class Upper for most bank schemes; FirstBank's 2026 round accepted Second Class Lower.
Usual length: about two years, with rotations across departments.
Main application season: roughly March to June, based on the 2025 and 2026 rounds.
Cost to apply: nothing. Genuine programmes never charge an application or "protocol" fee.
Which graduate trainee programmes run in Ghana?
The schemes below have run recently and published their criteria. Requirements change every year, so treat the last round as a guide and always confirm on the employer's own careers portal before you apply.
FirstBank Pan-African Graduate Trainee Programme (Ghana)
FirstBank recruits trainees for its subsidiaries in seven countries, including Ghana. The 2026 round closed on 28 June 2026 and asked for:
a maximum age of 27 by 30 June 2026;
at least a Second Class Lower degree, or an HND with Upper Credit, in any discipline;
five credits at secondary level, including English and Mathematics;
completion of NSS (for Ghanaian applicants) by 30 June 2026.
Applications were made through FirstBank's online careers portal, where the Ghana role was listed separately.
Stanbic Bank Ghana Graduate Trainee Programme
Stanbic Bank Ghana, part of Standard Bank Group, runs a 24-month programme with rotations across business units. The 2025 round closed on 17 June 2025 and was open to Ghanaian graduates who:
were aged 23 to 25;
had completed National Service;
held at least a Second Class Upper degree (GPA of 3.0 or higher);
had studied Business Administration, Economics, Actuarial Science, Statistics or Data Analytics;
were confident with Microsoft Office.
The bank has also run a separate two-year STEM Graduate Trainee Programme for science, technology, engineering and maths graduates; its first cohort of ten trainees completed the scheme in early 2025. Stanbic posts its roles on the Standard Bank Group careers site.
SEO Africa Graduate Trainee Programme: Ghana In-Country
SEO Africa trains high-achieving students and then places them as graduate trainees with partner firms in finance, investment and energy. Unlike the bank schemes, it targets final-year undergraduates at any university in Ghana with a First Class or Second Class Upper standing. The 2026 window ran from 30 March to 26 April 2026, so final-year students should watch for the 2027 call in the first quarter of the year.
Gold Fields Ghana Foundation Graduate Training Programme
This mining scheme is aimed at young graduates from the host communities of Gold Fields' Tarkwa and Damang mines. The 2026–2028 cohort admitted 105 graduates at Tarkwa for a two-year programme — the fourth intake for host-community graduates. The foundation says 261 graduates have gone through the programme since 2018 and about two-thirds are now employed. If you are from a host community, follow announcements from the foundation and your local community leaders.
MTN Global Graduate Development Programme
MTN Group runs a graduate development programme across its African and Middle East operations, with formal training delivered at regional learning centres, including one in West Africa. Eligibility is set country by country, so check the MTN Group graduate page and MTN Ghana's official channels for the current Ghana criteria.
Are any graduate trainee programmes open in Ghana now?
As of 25 October 2026, we could not confirm any of the flagship schemes above accepting new applications for Ghana; most 2026 windows closed between April and June. Smaller employers and recruitment firms do advertise trainee roles year-round, so keep an eye on current jobs in Ghana and banking jobs in Ghana on Jobsiz.
How to apply for a graduate trainee programme in Ghana
Finish National Service (or know your end date). Most bank schemes want NSS completed by the start date. Our guide to NSS postings for 2026/2027 explains the current service year.
Check the age and grade rules early. Age caps between 25 and 27 are common, so a programme you qualify for this year may be closed to you next year.
Gather your documents. Have your certificate or transcript, NSS certificate (or letter of appointment), Ghana Card and a short, up-to-date CV ready as PDFs.
Tailor your CV. Lead with grades, leadership roles, internships and attachments. Our CV format guide shows a clean structure.
Apply only through the official portal. Use the employer's own careers website, not links forwarded on WhatsApp.
Prepare for assessments. Expect online aptitude tests (numerical, verbal and logical reasoning), then interviews or an assessment centre. Practise answers such as "Tell me about yourself".
When do graduate trainee programmes open in Ghana?
Based on the last two rounds, plan around this rough calendar:
March–April: SEO Africa's in-country programme for final-year students.
March–June: the main bank intakes, including Stanbic and FirstBank.
Mid-year onwards: group-wide programmes such as MTN's, plus ad hoc trainee roles from smaller firms.
Use the quieter months before the main season to sharpen your CV, practise aptitude tests and set up job alerts.
Beware of graduate trainee and "protocol" scams
Fake trainee offers spread quickly on social media, especially around big intakes. Be suspicious of anyone who:
asks for money to "secure a slot", process your form or pay for medicals;
claims to have "protocol" or insider influence at a bank or mine;
sends application links that are not on the employer's official domain;
offers a role without any test or interview.
Genuine programmes are free to apply for. If you are unsure, check the employer's official website or call its head office.
Frequently asked questions
What is a graduate trainee programme?
It is a structured entry-level scheme, usually lasting about two years, that hires recent graduates and rotates them through different departments with training before placing them in a permanent role.
Do I need to finish National Service before applying?
For most bank schemes, yes. Stanbic's 2025 round required completed NSS, and FirstBank's 2026 round required NSS to be completed by 30 June 2026. SEO Africa is an exception, as it recruits final-year students.
Can I apply with a Second Class Lower?
Some programmes accept it. FirstBank's 2026 round accepted a Second Class Lower, while Stanbic's 2025 round asked for at least a Second Class Upper.
Is there an age limit for graduate trainee programmes in Ghana?
Often, yes. Recent rounds set limits such as 23 to 25 (Stanbic, 2025) and a maximum of 27 (FirstBank, 2026).
Do I have to pay to apply?
No. Genuine graduate trainee programmes do not charge application fees. Anyone asking for payment is likely running a scam.
