PlanetScale is seeking an AI Developer Experience Engineer to lead the end-to-end integration and visibility of its databases within the AI agent ecosystem. Operating remotely from the US, the person in this position will ensure that tools like Cursor, Claude Code, and Codex interact seamlessly with PlanetScale infrastructure through flawless MCP servers, CLIs, and directory plugins.
This hands-on role combines software engineering, performance testing, and public content creation. Responsibilities include building integrations, optimizing agent context, running evaluations, and educating the developer community through documentation, blog posts, video tutorials, and conference presentations. Responsibilities
- Build and maintain plugins for PlanetScale across agent marketplaces, skill registries, MCP directories, IDE extension stores, and AI application builders
- Own integrations with AI coding platforms, frameworks, and tools
- Test the PlanetScale MCP server and CLI across clients such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and VS Code to prevent regressions
- Identify and resolve friction points related to database creation, connections, migrations, and query debugging inside AI agents
- Enhance agent context by refining tool descriptions, skills, llms.txt files, agent-focused documentation, and error messages
- Optimize for answer engine optimization to ensure AI agents correctly find and recommend PlanetScale
- Create and maintain skills for working with Postgres, MySQL, Vitess, Neki, and PlanetScale
- Design and execute evaluations that run real agent tasks against PlanetScale databases
- Benchmark agent performance with PlanetScale and measure recommendation frequency, accuracy, and usage metrics
- Produce developer demos, sample applications, documentation, guides, blog posts, and videos
- Represent the company at conferences to communicate effective AI building strategies
Requirements
- Daily use of AI coding agents with strong opinions on optimal tool usability
- Demonstrated experience building an MCP server, plugin, CLI, or SDK utilized by real developers
- Software engineering background in languages such as TypeScript and Go, paired with familiarity with APIs, OAuth, and the command line
- Experience writing documentation, blogs, and video content
- Strong communication skills for interacting with broad audiences and customers on social media
- Experience working with relational databases like Postgres, MySQL, or SQLite, including schema design, migrations, and connection handling
- Data fluency in designing evaluations, querying dashboards, and analyzing performance trends
- Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts in writing, on video, and on stage
- High level of independence and speed in identifying gaps, deploying fixes, and sharing updates
- Genuine curiosity and consistent habits for keeping up with the AI tooling landscape
Qualifications
- Contributions to the MCP specification, SDKs, or popular open-source MCP servers
- Experience writing agent skills, plugins, or rules files for Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex
- Experience with LLM evaluation tools and building agent benchmarks
- Background in AEO, GEO, or tracking LLM product recommendations
- An existing active blog, YouTube channel, or GitHub profile followed by developers
- Experience working with Vitess, database sharding, or large-scale database operations
