Job Description
Canonical is hiring a home-based Alliances Field Engineer, with recruitment open worldwide. The engineer supports the company's largest partners, such as Intel, Nvidia, Google and Dell, along with hardware makers, global system integrators, software vendors, channel resellers and public cloud alliance partners. The goal is to help these organisations understand and adopt Canonical's open source platform, both for their own use and for their customers.
The job is hands-on and technical. The engineer designs cloud infrastructure built on Kubernetes, Kubeflow, OpenStack, Ceph and Spark, whether deployed on premises or on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud. The role also covers wiring together common open source databases and messaging tools such as PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Kafka, Cassandra and NGINX. The engineer helps partners create joint offerings on Canonical technology, writes and releases joint reference architectures, runs technical validation, and leads onboarding sessions and workshops for partner staff.
Field engineering is described as one of the toughest roles at Canonical, since customers may ask about any part of the product range and expect a well-informed reply. The engineer also helps partner executives plan joint go-to-market programmes from a technical standpoint. The posting stresses that advice must serve partners and customers properly, even where it runs against Canonical's commercial interests.
The ideal candidate has broad Linux experience, with Ubuntu preferred, plus knowledge of Kubernetes, Ceph and software automation. They have designed solutions on public or private clouds, understand Python and bash, troubleshoot effectively, and write and speak fluent English. The person should enjoy customer engagement, juggle several tasks, follow through on commitments, and be prepared to travel abroad for up to 30 percent of their time.
