Job Description
This is a full-time, on-site backend engineering position in London with Deliveroo. The Agent Experience group creates AI-enabled server-side services that power agent-assist features on Astra, the company's support platform. Those features help staff settle issues involving customers, merchants and Dasher partners more rapidly.
The team sits where language-model features meet heavy, time-sensitive support systems. New joiners begin with individual features and take on wider ownership over time. Typical tasks include drafting a technical approach for each feature, producing an RFC when a change touches other engineers, and taking a feature from specification to tested release.
Work also covers connecting to LLM providers, sending prompts and receiving completions, handling what providers return, and verifying that generated output is accurate and sound. Engineers split assigned projects into work items, provide estimates, and monitor their own dependencies. They use AI tools across coding, testing and review while judging results critically, and they take part in peer review as both reviewers and people being reviewed.
Candidates need strong Go fundamentals and experience shipping production services, plus two to four years in backend engineering and evidence of expanding responsibility. Production work with LLM features is welcome but not essential, since newcomers will be coached. The job often means following a problem through several chat and support services to the responsible service, instead of speculating about where it lives.
Responsibilities
- Create and keep up the server-side code behind agent-assist features on Astra
- Shape the design for each feature and write RFCs when other engineers' work is affected
- Deliver features end to end, including model calls and processing of provider replies
- Check that LLM-generated output is accurate and of good quality
- Divide project work into tasks, estimate them, and track progress and blockers
- Bring AI tools into coding, testing and review while questioning their results
- Contribute to code review in both directions
- Partner with senior engineers and neighbouring teams, surfacing risks early
Requirements
- Strong Go skills and experience building and running production services
- Capacity to take a feature from a spec on paper through to tested, released code
- Precise technical writing, including RFCs for feature-level choices
- Sound sense of when to seek advice and when to press ahead
- Two to four years in backend engineering with growing responsibility
- Persistence in tracing faults to the correct service across several support surfaces
Qualifications
- Hands-on exposure to language-model features in live systems, such as prompt and completion work and provider APIs
