The company hires an Intermediate Backend Engineer for its Agent Foundations stage, a high-visibility area combining the core platform with the corporate AI strategy. This role centres on building foundational features for agentic artificial intelligence experiences across the entire software delivery lifecycle.
The successful engineer will develop, maintain, and ship capabilities for the Duo Agent Platform within the GitLab monolith utilizing Ruby, and occasionally the Python AI Gateway. Key duties involve collaborating with product management, user experience, frontend, backend, and artificial intelligence specialists to refine criteria and deliver small iterations of improvements. Responsibilities include designing and reviewing GraphQL and REST APIs, expanding automated testing through RSpec, sharing engineering standards, and joining Tier two on-call rotations to resolve production issues.
Candidates should possess experience maintaining production Ruby on Rails applications, designing REST or GraphQL APIs, handling relational databases like PostgreSQL, and identifying performance bottlenecks. A strong enthusiasm for artificial intelligence tools in daily workflows is essential, alongside clear written and verbal communication skills for asynchronous, remote collaboration across EMEA and AMER timezones.
Responsibilities
- Develop, ship, and maintain features for the Duo Agent Platform within the Ruby-based GitLab monolith and Python AI Gateway
- Collaborate across product management, user experience, frontend, backend, and artificial intelligence teams to refine requirements and deliver iterative improvements
- Design, implement, and review GraphQL and REST APIs alongside backend logic
- Enhance automated testing frameworks such as RSpec to ensure code quality and rapid developer feedback
- Share engineering standards, patterns, and knowledge regarding responsible artificial intelligence integration
- Participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations to troubleshoot production concerns, conduct root cause analysis, and enhance system observability and resilience
- Monitor competitive developments to help keep the platform best-in-class
Requirements
- Experience building and maintaining production Ruby on Rails applications including data models, APIs, and background jobs
- Familiarity with designing and extending REST or GraphQL APIs while focusing on scalability and backward compatibility
- Enthusiasm for artificial intelligence and practical daily usage of AI tools
- Proficiency in SQL and relational databases like PostgreSQL, including query optimization and data modeling
- Ability to identify and resolve application performance bottlenecks
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for remote, asynchronous, cross-functional environments
Qualifications
