The enterprise seeks a Backend Engineer to join the newly established Repository Services team within the Create stage. This group manages the repository side of Source Code, governing how code enters a repository, authorization for modifications, and verification processes. Operating in one of the company's oldest and most intricate product areas, the position utilizes Ruby and GraphQL across self-managed instances, GitLab.com, and GitLab Dedicated.
During its initial months, Repository Services focuses heavily on reliability, support, performance optimization, caching, rate limiting, and observability. This role suits professionals experienced in backend web applications who embrace AI tools as daily productivity multipliers. Team members collaborate closely with cross-functional groups, product management, security, and the Gitaly team to deliver robust software systems.
Responsibilities
- Develop secure, performant, and well-tested features utilizing Ruby and GraphQL
- Design and maintain backend services, business logic, application programming interfaces, and data models
- Triage and resolve support requests and bugs tied to team-owned features
- Monitor production health metrics, handle Tier 2 on-call duties, and troubleshoot incidents
- Integrate artificial intelligence coding agents for scoped tasks to accelerate delivery without compromising quality
- Participate in code reviews, contribute to technical documentation, and collaborate asynchronously and synchronously across functions
Requirements
- Professional background in building backend web applications, services, or application programming interfaces with Ruby and GraphQL
- Knowledge of relational databases, structured query language, data modeling, caching, background processing, and backend performance strategies
- Experience contributing to user-facing workflows and maintaining underlying systems
- Experience writing backend unit and integration tests with familiarity of Git and collaborative review processes
- Written and spoken English communication proficiency for an asynchronous setting
Qualifications
- Background using artificial intelligence coding agents and reviewing their output
- Interest in building monorepo skills within a complex product environment
