Job Description
GitLab operates an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, serving over 50 million registered users and more than half of the Fortune 100 companies. The organization provides an intelligent platform designed to elevate developer efficiency, streamline operational workflows, mitigate compliance and security risks, and speed up digital transformations.
As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Core DevOps Container Registry team, the successful candidate will design, build, and scale complex backend systems while shaping the technical direction of the product. This position is suited for professionals who enjoy high-impact architectural decisions, asynchronous remote collaboration, and integrating agentic AI into production workflows. Team members collaborate across product, infrastructure, data, and security domains to boost system reliability, performance, and overall quality.

Engineers take ownership of operational excellence, participate in incident management, and provide mentorship to intermediate and junior colleagues. Candidates of diverse background experiences are encouraged to apply, as the recruitment process evaluates holistic potential rather than strict checkbox criteria.

- Integrate agentic AI into production engineering workflows and evaluate its efficacy
Requirements
- Demonstrated background in backend architecture, data systems, API design, and performance optimization within complex environments
- Experience designing modular backend boundaries, migration-safe architectures, and bounded contexts
- Familiarity with modern backend languages and systems programming concepts
- Practical experience developing or operating production-grade agentic systems that handle loops, tool usage, and error management at scale
- Strong written communication skills suited for an asynchronous, remote-first workplace
