Job Description
GitLab operates an intelligent DevSecOps orchestration platform trusted by millions of users and top enterprises to build and ship secure software efficiently. The company embraces artificial intelligence as a core productivity tool across its daily operations and team workflows. Within the Create stage, the Repository Services team is expanding and seeks a Backend Engineer based in the United Kingdom.
This position focuses on the repository side of Source Code features, which encompasses how code enters a repository, authorization rules, and verification procedures. The engineering work utilizes Ruby and GraphQL across self-managed setups, GitLab Dedicated, and GitLab.com. During the initial months, the newly formed team prioritizes system reliability, performance tuning, caching, rate limiting, and observability. Candidates will collaborate closely with various cross-functional groups, including Gitaly and Code Review teams, while incorporating artificial intelligence coding agents into well-scoped tasks.
This opportunity is well-suited for backend practitioners who enjoy tackling legacy constraints, optimizing relational databases and SQL queries, maintaining robust application programming interfaces, and participating in rotational on-call support.
Responsibilities
- Develop secure, performant, and well-tested features utilizing Ruby and GraphQL
- Design and maintain backend services, APIs, business logic, and data models governing repository code access and verification
- Triage and resolve bugs and support requests related to team-owned features
- Collaborate across multiple functional teams asynchronously and synchronously
- Leverage and critically evaluate AI coding agents for well-scoped tasks to accelerate delivery
- Monitor production health metrics, handle Tier 2 on-call duties, troubleshoot incidents, and improve system resiliency
Requirements
- Professional background in building backend web applications, services, or APIs using Ruby and GraphQL
- Working knowledge of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, background processing, and backend performance tuning
- Experience maintaining underlying systems for user-facing workflows
- Demonstrated ability to write backend unit and integration tests while familiar with Git and collaborative code reviews
- Proficiency in clear written and spoken English communication for an asynchronous work environment
- Capability to manage priorities, navigate ambiguity, and take ownership of assigned tasks
Qualifications
- Familiarity with the testing pyramid
- Prior experience utilizing artificial intelligence coding agents and reviewing their output, or a strong interest in developing these skills within a complex monorepo
Core Skills
Benefits
- Flexible paid time off
- Team member resource groups
- Equity compensation and employee stock purchase plan
- Growth and development fund
- Parental leave
