The company seeks a Principal Engineer to help build the Duo Agent Platform across the software lifecycle. This senior technical leadership position involves setting technical direction, working hands-on from proof-of-concept to implementation, and collaborating across multiple teams to ensure agentic capabilities are reliable, observable, and fast. The platform spans agent execution, flow definition, the AI Catalog, model routing, and governance, operating across GitLab.com, GitLab Dedicated, and Self-Managed installations. The role reports to the VP of the AI Engineering organization and requires working closely with Engineering Managers, Product Management, Infrastructure, and Security.
Responsibilities

- Build the orchestration layer for agent reliability, covering session lifecycle, tool invocation, context assembly, concurrency, retries, and graceful failure modes
- Drive initiatives from proof-of-concept through architecture to full implementation
- Participate in the incident management on-call rotation to support availability goals for GitLab.com
- Write design documents, architecture narratives, and decision records for cross-team alignment
- Ensure architecture compatibility across multi-tenant GitLab.com, Dedicated, and Self-Managed deployments while respecting data governance boundaries
- Design extensibility surfaces enabling customers to build custom agents and integrate external agents into workflows
- Drive down the cost and latency of agentic requests while collaborating on model selection, routing, and credit consumption
- Define evaluation practices via offline benchmarks and online experiments to measure task completion, accuracy, and cost
- Build governance and safety controls with Security and Compliance, including policy-driven execution, permission semantics, and audit traceability
- Complete interview training and participate in departmental hiring as a technical interviewer or panel member
Requirements

- Experience defining evaluation frameworks and using benchmark and experiment results for architectural decisions
- Experience designing human-in-the-loop controls, safety guardrails, and responsible AI practices
- Ability to drive alignment across engineering, product, infrastructure, and security on ambiguous problems
- Experience mentoring senior engineers and shaping technical direction across multiple teams without direct authority
