Job Description
Gremlin, a company known for chaos engineering and reliability testing, is hiring a Data Scientist focused on AI and machine learning. Its Reliability Platform lets software teams monitor and test systems for risks, and the company supports large organizations where downtime is costly. The role is remote and full-time, with a salary range of USD 220,000 to 290,000 per year.
The data scientist mines Gremlin's collection of millions of chaos experiments for failure patterns, root causes and signs of resilience. Responsibilities include pretraining and fine-tuning models that detect, label and explain failures, building pipelines and feature stores that serve both training and real-time predictions, and developing remediation suggestions that may later run automatically. The person teams up with platform engineers and SREs so the analysis gets built into the product, drawing on techniques like causal inference, graph learning, time-series work and reinforcement learning. Findings also feed customer features that map blast radius and speed recovery.
Candidates need five-plus years shipping machine learning systems, preferably for distributed platforms, infrastructure or DevOps/SRE settings, and should bring software engineering depth. Hands-on use of causal inference, graph methods, time-series work or reinforcement learning is expected, along with building feature pipelines, agile practice, and a disciplined approach to experiments and evaluation. The ability to split unclear problems into concrete milestones is valued.
Helpful background includes chaos engineering, SRE, distributed systems, agentic AI, large-scale causal work, MLOps tooling for serving and monitoring models, remote-first collaboration and on-call incident response. The posting says visa sponsorship is not offered. Benefits include 401(k) matching, equity, flexible time off and paid holidays.
Responsibilities
- Analyze the dataset of chaos experiments to find failure patterns and root causes
- Pretrain and fine-tune models that detect, classify and explain failures
- Build data pipelines and feature stores for training and real-time inference
- Develop automated remediation recommendations based on past outcomes
- Team up with platform engineers and SREs, putting failure analysis into the product
- Use causal, graph, time-series and reinforcement learning techniques to sharpen results
- Turn experiment insights into customer features for blast radius and root cause
Requirements
- Five or more years of professional experience productionizing machine learning
- Practical use of causal inference, graph methods, time-series or RL approaches
- Experience building pipelines and feature stores for training and real-time use
- Experience in agile teams
- Disciplined approach to experimentation, model evaluation and engineering practice
- Able to partner with SREs and platform engineers and turn research into shipped features
Qualifications
- Chaos engineering, SRE or distributed systems background
- Production experience with agentic AI or with large-scale causal analysis
- Experience with MLOps tools for serving models, watching them in production or managing features
- Remote-first work experience
- On-call and incident management experience
Core Skills
Benefits
- 401(k) matching
- Equity
- Flexible time off
- Paid company holidays
